Heterosis in Intervarietal Brassica Hybrids Grown Under Field Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To observe the performance of eighteen Brassica campestris hybrids for yield and yield contributing characters, an experiment was carried out at the Field laboratory of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh during November 1998 to March 1999. The experiment was laid out following a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Heterosis was estimated over a mid-parent and better parent. On the basis of heterotic values, the hybrids M-18 x Dholi, M-18 x M-91, Sampad x M-27, M-18 x Sampad, M-18 x Sampad, M-18 x Sampad, Dholi x M -395, and M-18 x M-91 were found to be the best in performance for days to flowering, plant height, no. of primary branches/ plant, no. of secondary branches/ plant, no. of siliqua /plant, siliqua density, siliqua length and seed yield /plant.

Objectives:

As a result, the country is spending more than Tk.800 crore every year to import edible oils and oilseed (Rabbani, 1992). The present study was undertaken to select suitable cross combinations and segregants aiming at developing high-yielding varieties of Brassica.

Methodology:

The study was conducted during November 1998 to March 1999 at the Field Laboratory, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, It is located in the Agroecological zone (AEZ) Old Brahmaputra Floodplain. The soil was sandy loam in texture having a pH of 6.5. Eighteen Brassica hybrids were evaluated against their six parents for some yield contributing and morphological characters. The plants were allowed to grow till maturity. Weeding, watering, and spraying of insecticides and fungicides and other intercultural operations were done according to necessity. A Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) was followed with their replications. The characters days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height, no of primary branches/ plant, no. of secondary branches/plant, no. of siliqua/plant, siliqua density, siliqua length, no. of seeds/siliqua and seed yield/plant were studied. The heterotic values of the studied characters were estimated.
