The polyculture of Thai pangus (Pangasius hypophthalmus) with Indian major carps has been increasing due to its high potential for commercial aquaculture, yet there have been few nutritional studies regarding its production and economics using hand made and commercial feeds. An investigation was made to evaluate the effect of three types of feed on the production of P. hypophthalmus polyculture with rohu (Labeo rohita) from May, 2005 to April 2006. Production performance by feeding deliberately manipulated Hand Made Feed (F1) was compared with that of other two locally available commercial fish feed namely Sunny Fish Feed (F2) and Saudi Bangla Fish Feed (F3) in three respective treatments of T1, T2 and T3. All treatments were carried out in triplicate with a stocking density of 24700/ha for Thai pangus and 4940/ha for rohu. The average initial weight of individual P. hypophthalmus and L rohita stocked were 4.5 and 33.5 g respectively. The survival rate of Thai pangus and rohu was found to be 95 and 78; 94 and 83 and 97 and 80 in T1, T2 and T3 respectively. The average final individual growth in weight of P. hypophthalmus and L rohita were 820 and 710; 846 and 770 and 872 and 717 g which produced a total of 19241.3 and 2770.8; 19642.4 and 3157.2 and 20892.2 and 2833.6 kg/ha in T1, T2 and T3 respectively. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) was estimated to be 2.3 from Th 2.1 from T2 and 1.96 from T3. Net profit was calculated 523454, 491196 and 469676 Tk/ha for T1, T2 and T3 respectively. Total production was higher in T3, whereas net profit was higher in T, compared with other treatments. This study suggests that hand-made quality feed can reduce the feed cost to achieve higher profit in the Thai pangus polyculture.

Therefore, the availability of reliable data regarding feed is important for the rapid growth of fish and cost control of the feed. Determination of suitable types of feed based on reliable data may help to promote fish growth and production, thus increasing profitability. So the main objective of the present study was to identify low-cost suitable feed for the reasonable production of Thai pangus (P. hypophthalmus)

The experiment was carried out for a period of 11 months, from May, 2005 to April 2006 in nine rectangular-shaped earthen ponds (0.2 ha each) in Batiaghata Upazilla under the district of Khulna, Bangladesh. All treatments were carried out in triplicate with a stocking density of 24700/ha for Thai pangus and 4940/ha for rohu. The average initial weight of individual P. hypophthalmus and L. rohita stocked were 4.5 and 33.5 g respectively. Three different types of feed - Hand Made Feed (F1), Sunney Fish Feed (F2) and Saudi Bangla Fish Feed (F3) with different proximate compositions (Table 1) were used in three respective treatments of T1, T2 and T3.

Protein level (N X 6.25) was determined by the Kjeldahl method after acid digestion using an Auto Kjeldahl System (1030-Autoanalyser; Tecator, Hoganos, Sweden). Fat level was determined by the ether extraction method by Soxtec System HT (Soxtec System HT6; Tecator, Hoganos, Sweden). Moisture content was determined by oven-drying at 105°C for 24 h until a stable weight was attained. The two commercial fish feeds namely Sunney Fish Feed (F2) and Saudi Bangla Fish Feed (F3) were purchased from the local market. Hand Made Feed (F1) was formulated as a pellet and dried under sunshine.

The experimental diets were supplied to the ponds at different feeding rates and frequencies according to their body weight. The rate of supplied feed was decreased with increasing the individual bodyweight of fish. Fishes were weighed once every month using a random sampling method and the daily ratio was adjusted accordingly. A feed testing tray was used to avoid excess feeding. Different water quality parameters viz. temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH were monitored fortnightly at 10-12 a.m. Growth rate, survival rate, feed conversion ratio (FCR), production and cost-benefit analysis were calculated according to Mahmud et al. (1993). Statistical test (ANOVA) was done at 5% significance level.

In any fish culture operation, the farmer can be benefited if he can make a judicious decision in supplementary feed selection for particular fish biomass because this sole item constitutes the largest part of the expenditure in most of the culture operations. A similar message is also reflected from the present Thai pangus polyculture experiment. The yield-increasing supplementary diet may not always be cost-effective and hand-made quality feed can be recommended over the commercial diets to the Thai pangus growers to achieve a higher profit reducing the feed cost.
