Performance of Tuberose as Influenced by Boron and Zinc in Grey Terrace Soils at Joydebpur Region of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field study of Boron and Zinc on flower production of Tuberose was conducted at Floriculture Research Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the months of March to July in the year of 2005-2007. The objectives were to evaluate the response of tuberose to B and Zn micronutrients and to find out the optimum dose of Boron and Zinc for maximizing flower yield and quality of tuberose. Sixteen treatments comprising four levels of B (0, 1, 2 and 3 kg ha1) and four levels of Zn (0, 1.5, 3.5 and 4.5 kg ha-I) along with a blanket dose of N300P90K 170- 20 S kg/ha and cow dung 5 t/ha were used in the trial. Tuberose (CV. double) was taken as a test crop. It was revealed that B and Zn and their combination had a profound effect on flower characters and flower yield of Tuberose. It was also evident that Boron-Zinc integration was appeared to be more responsive than their single applications. All the studied parameters like plant height, effective leaves, length of rachis and spike, number of florets and flower size and weight of stick were greatly influenced with the added higher doses of boron-zinc combination but subsequent augmentation of B and Zn suppressed the flower production. However, the longest mean spike length (93.50 cm and 89.96 cm), the maximum number of florets (49.13 and 54.18/spike) and the highest stick yield (114 g and 123.8 g) were recorded with combined application of B2.0Zn3.0 kg ha-1 and 126% increased flower stick yield was found to be contributed by said treatment combination Tii(B2.0Zn3.0 kg ha-1) which was significantly higher over all other treatment combination. A similar result trend was also noticed in a single application of B and Zn but their effect was not distinctly pronounced.

Objectives:

It is reported that boron is highly responsive to opening the flower buds of tuberose (cv. double) and can significantly increase the fragrance of flowers. However, information regarding nutritional requirements and appropriate soil management techniques are lacking for tuberose cultivation in Bangladesh. Hence, the present experiment was undertaken to evaluate the response of tuberose to B and Zn and their optimum dose for high yield and quality flower production in Grey Terrace soil of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The field experiment was carried out at the Floriculture Research farm of Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur during the months of March to July in the year of 2005-2007. Nutrient levels of investigated soils like N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Zn, B, Mn etc. were found to be below and at par the critical levels. There were sixteen treatments comprising four levels of B (0, 1, 2 and 3 kg ha 1 )and four levels of Zn (0, 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 kg ha-1) included in the study. The field experiment was laid out in randomized blocks design having three replications. The unit plot size and plant spacing were maintained by lm x 0.9m and 25 cm x 15 cm, respectively. Tuberose cv. double was tested in the trial. The combined blanket dose of N300P901(175S20 kg ha-1 and cow dung 10 t ha-1 were used in treated plots. The planting material bulbs were sown on 15th March, 2006 and 2007 respectively. All P, K, S, B, Zn and cow dung except N were applied and mixed up well with the soils during final land preparation. Nitrogen was applied in three equal installments. First one-third of N at 30 days, second top-dress at 45 days and remaining one-third of N was applied at 60 days of planting bulbs. Intercultural practices like weeding, irrigation, spraying pesticides etc were done in time. At different stages, opened and bloomed flowers were cut time to time for recording field data. Ten flowering plants from each treatment were randomly selected for data collection. After compilation of field data, it was computed and analyzed statistically.

It is summarized in two years study that B @ 2.0 kg and Zn @ 3.0 kg ha-1 along with a blanket dose of N3c0P901(175S20) and cow dung 5 t/ha was found to be optimum for tuberose cultivation. So, it may be concluded that Boron and Zinc @ B2.0Z113.0 kg ha.-1 with a said blanket dose of chemical fertilizers could be recommended for maximizing flower yield and quality of tuberose at Grey Terrace Soils of Bangladesh.
