In this paper, attempts have been made to study the correlation between minimum temperatures (Tmin) of pre-monsoon season with the rainfall of monsoon season over Bangladesh and to study the distribution of minimum temperature over the country. The correlation coefficient (CC) between pre-monsoon minimum temperature with the monthly and seasonal rainfall of monsoon season has been studied using the data sample of thirty meteorological stations during 1951 to 2000 all over Bangladesh. The correlation coefficients between the monthly/seasonal rainfall of pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons with the monthly/seasonal minimum temperature of the pre-monsoon season have been determined. The highest minimum temperature (Tmin) has been observed in the southern part of Bangladesh and the lowest Tmin is observed in the northern and north-eastern part of the country in the months of March, April, and May. The average minimum temperature of March, April and pre-monsoon season was positively correlated with the rainfall of June all over the country with little anomalies. On the other hand, the average minimum temperature of March, April, and May are negatively correlated with the rainfall of July, August, and September in the eastern and central regions of the country.

In this work, an attempt has been made to investigate the correlation between the monthly minimum temperature of the pre-monsoon season and the rainfall of the monsoon season. Attempts have also been made to find out the correlation between the seasonal average minimum temperature of pre-monsoon season and a seasonal average rainfall of monsoon season.

At first daily minimum temperature data of pre-monsoon season and daily rainfall data of monsoon season has been collected for 30 meteorological stations all over Bangladesh during the period 1951-2000 from the Climate Division of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD). Then daily data are used to obtain monthly, seasonal and annual data. Mean monthly minimum temperature of pre-monsoon season (March-May) and mean monthly rainfall of monsoon season (June – September) have been computed for each station and each month under consideration. These values are then used to compute the correlation coefficient (CC) between rainfall of monsoon season and minimum temperature of pre-monsoon season with the help of the following relation:

The following conclusions have been drawn: i) During the pre-monsoon season, the southern part of the country is warmer than the northern part and the south-western part is warmer than the eastern part of the country. ii) The minimum temperature of March, April and May are negatively correlated in the central and eastern parts with the rainfall of July, August, and September. iii) The rainfall of June is positively correlated with the minimum temperature of March, April, May and the average of pre-monsoon season with little anomalies. iv) The Tmin of March, April, and May and pre-monsoon season has positively correlated with the rainfall of July and August in the southern region of the country. v) The CC is not significant between the average minimum temperature of March, April, May, and the premonsoon season with the average rainfall of June, July, August, September and monsoon season.
