Regional Adaptive Trials on Lentil in Saarc Member Countries (2015--2016)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twelve entries of lentil collected from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Pakistan were evaluated at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna during rabi 2015-16. The trial was laid out in an RCB design with 3 replications with a view to select promising genotypes for each of the SAARC member countries. Significant differences among the genotypes were observed in all the yield contributing characters. The highest pods/plant was obtained from LT-01 followed by LT-04 and the lowest was obtained from LT-02. The bold seeded entry was LT-02 followed by LT-04. Among the entries, the highest yield was obtained from LT-03 followed by LT-02, LT-05, LT-07, and LT-11. So, these five entries are selected to evaluate in the next year.

Objectives:

Through the cooperation by exchanging germplasm of different SAARC member countries can be benefitted through selecting better genotype by conducting the regional adaptive trial. With a view to developing SAARC seed bank among the member countries, germplasm exchange was carried out from SAARC Agricultural Information Centre (SAIC), Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment consisted of twelve entries including BARI Masur-3, BARI Masur-5, BARI Masur-6, and BARI Masur-7 from Bangladesh, DPL62, IPL 316, PANT Lentil-6 from India, Sagun and Maheswar Bharati from Nepal and Masur-93, Masur-2006, RK 2004 from Pakistan. But all of them were given new accession numbers from SAIC except BARI Masur-3 which is used as a check. The location of the experiment was Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna during rabi 2015-16. It was laid out in an RCB design with 3 replications. The unit plot was 4 rows × 4 m long with a spacing of 40×10 cm. Seeds were sown in the rows carefully by hands about 3 cm depth and then covered by soils. Post sowing irrigation was given to ensure seed germination. Mulching was done and soil crusts were broken. Each of the entries was investigated from seedling to harvest and compared with check. Disease scoring scale (0-5) used for rating of Stemphylium blight as 0 = No infection, 1 = Few scattered leaf infections but no twig blighted, 2 = 5–10% leaflet infection and/or few scattered 1% twigs blighted, 3 = 11–20% leaflet infection and/or 1–5 % twigs blighted, 4 = 21– 50% leaflet infection and/or 6–10 % twigs blighted and 5 = 51% leaflet infection and/or = 10% twigs blighted developed by Bakr and Ahmed (1992). Grain yield was calculated from the whole plot. At maturity superior individual genotypes were selected on the basis of earliness, disease reaction, and yield. Yield data was recorded from the whole plot and converted into kg/ha. The statistical analysis was done using MSTATC computer software. Yield and yield contributing characters are recorded

Significant differences among the genotypes were observed for all the yield contributing characters except the plant population (Table 17). The entries LT-03, LT-05, and LT-07 flowered and matured earlier and LT-01, LT-02, and LT-08 matured late. Numerically, LT-01 was the tallest followed by LT-11, and entry LT-08 was the dwarf among the entries. The highest pods/plant was obtained from LT-01 followed by LT-04 and the lowest was obtained from LT-02. The bold seeded entry was LT-02 followed by LT-04. Almost all the entries showed moderate resistance to stemphylium blight except LT-06. Among the entries, the highest yield was obtained from LT-03 followed by LT-02, LT-05, LT-07, and LT-11. So, those five entries are selected to evaluate in the next year. Considering all the characteristics LT-02, LT-03, LT-05, LT-07, and LT-11 were selected to evaluate in the next rabi season and the rest others will be conserved at PRC as germplasm.
