Evaluation of Lentil Germplasm Collected from West Bengal (2015--2016)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fourteen entries of lentil collected from west Bengal, India with two native varieties BARI Masur-6 and BARI Masur-7 were evaluated at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna during rabi 2015-16 and laid out in an RCB design with 2 replications with a view to select promising genotypes. Significant differences among the genotypes were observed in all the yield contributing characters. Subhendu was the tallest plant followed by RL-12-179 and the entry BARI Masur-7 was the dwarf among the entries. Bold seeded entry was RL-12-175 and small-seeded entry was RL-12-179. Almost all the entries showed moderate resistance to stemphylium blight. Among the entries, the highest yield was obtained from DPL-62 followed by RL-12-178 and Maitree.

Objectives:

To evaluate the promising germplasm of lentils of West Bengal for the Bangladesh environment

Methodology:

The experiment consisted of sixteen entries where fourteen entries were collected from West Bengal, India, and 2 varieties of Lentil (BARI Masur-6 and BARI Masur-7) from Bangladesh were used as checks. The location of the experiment was Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna during rabi 2015-18. It was laid out in an RCB design with 2 replications. The unit plot of 2 rows × 4 m long with a spacing of 40×10 cm. Seeds were sown on 7 November 2015 by hands at about 3 cm depth and covered by soils. Post sowing irrigation was given to ensure seed germination. Mulching was done and soil crusts were broken. Each of the entries was observed from seedling to harvest and compared with check. Disease scoring scale (0-5) used for rating of Stemphylium blight as 0 = No infection, 1 = Few scattered leaf infections but no twig blighted, 2 = 5–10% leaflet infection and/or few scattered 1% twigs blighted, 3 = 11–20% leaflet infection and/or 1–5 % twigs blighted, 4 = 21– 50% leaflet infection and/or 6–10 % twigs blighted and 5 = 51% leaflet infection and/or = 10% twigs blighted developed by Bakr and Ahmed (1992). Grain yield was calculated from the whole plot. At maturity, the best individual genotypes were selected on the basis of earliness, disease reaction and higher yield. The yield was recorded from the whole plot and converted into kg/ha. The statistical analysis was done using MSTATC computer software.

Significant differences among the genotypes were observed in all the yield contributing characters except pods/plants. The entry RL-12-180 flowered earlier followed by L-4076 and BARI Masur-6 matured earlier followed by BARI Masur-7. All the tested entries matured late as compared to checks. Numerically, Subhendu was the tallest plant followed by RL-12-179, and entry BARI Masur-7 was the dwarf among the entries. Bold seeded entry was RL-12-175 and small-seeded entry was RL-12-179. Almost all the entries showed moderate resistance to stemphylium blight. Among the entries, the highest yield was obtained from DPL-62 followed by RL-12-178 and Maitree. Considering all the characteristics, six entries RL-12-171, RL-12-18, WB-14, DPL-62, RL-12-178, and Maitree are selected to evaluate in the next year and the rest others will be conserved at PRC as germplasm
