Effects of irrigation and phosphorus fertilization on growth and yield of summer mungbean (cv. BINAmoog-5) were evaluated. Experimental treatments comprised four levels of irrigation viz, no irrigation, one irrigation at 20 DAS, two irrigations at 20 & 40 DAS and three irrigations at 20, 40 & 60 DAS and four levels of 'phosphorus viz. 0, 20, 30 & 40 kg P205 ha-1. The highest number of branches plant-1, number of pods plant-1, pod length, number of seeds podl, seed yield and harvest index were obtained from two irrigations. Application of 30 kg P205 ha-1 produced the highest number of seeds pod-1, seed yield and harvest index. The highest seed yield was obtained from the interaction of two irrigations -x 40 kg P205 ha-1.

Phosphorus deficiency causes yield reduction by limiting plant growth (Pbehlman,19p1). Considering the above-mentioned issues, the present study was undertaken to find out the effect of supplemental irrigation and optimum dose, of phosphorus on the yield of mungbean.

The field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh during the period from February to May 2006. The experimental soil was silty loam in texture with pH 6.7, organic matter 0.87%, total nitrogen 0.11%, available P 15%, exchangeable potassium 0.07 me/100 mg soil and available sulphur 18 ppm. The treatments comprised four levels of irrigation viz, no irrigation, one irrigation at 20 days after sowing (DAS), two irrigations at 20 DAS and 40 DAS and three irrigations at 20, 40 and 60 DAS and four levels of phosphorus viz. 0, 20, 30 and 40 kg P205 ha-1. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications assigning irrigation in the main plots and phosphorus in the sub-plots. Each sub-plot size was 4.0 m x 2.5 m. Block to block and plot to plot distances were 1.25 m and 1.0 m, respectively. Al the fertilizers except P205 were applied at final land preparation though urea, muriate &- potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate at 40, 30, 30 and 5 kg ha-1, respectively in all plots. Specific rates of P205 were applied at specific plots. Crop management practices such as gap filling, weeding, thinning and pests control were done wherever necessary. Harvesting was done two times during experimental period because all pods were not matured at a time. The crop was harvested plot-wise. First harvesting was dono at 77 DAS and second harvesting at 15 days Of first harvesting. Before harvesting five sample plants were uprooted for data recording which wore selected randomly from the beginning. The harvested seeds of mungbean (cv. BINAMOOG5) were collected plot-wise and weighed and adjusted at a moisture content of 12%. The data were analyzed statistically using the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) technique with the help of the computer package program MSTAT-C and the mean differences were adjudged by Duncan's Range Test (DMRT) (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

The interaction between irrigation and phosphorus level significantly affected the number of branches plant-1, number of pods plant-1, number of seeds pod-1, seed yield, biological yield and harvest index, but pod length, 1000-seed weight and stover yield were found unaffected. The highest and the lowest number of branches plant-1 were obtained from the interaction between two irrigations and fertilization with 40 kg P205 ha-1 and control treatment. The highest and the lowest number of pods plant-1 were found from the interaction between two irrigations and fertilization with 20 kg P205 ha-1 and control treatments. Two irrigations in combination with 40 kg P205 ha-1 produced the highest number of seeds pod-1 and the lowest number of seeds pod-1 was found from the interaction between three irrigations and control treatment, respectively. The highest and the lowest seed yield were obtained from the interaction between two irrigations and fertilization with 40 kg P205 ha-1 and control treatments, respectively.
