Participatory Varietal Selection of Pea (short Duration Type) (2015--2016)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at OFRD, Pabna and Jessore during rabi 2015-16 to find out the desirable lines of pea over different locations. Among the short duration genotypes, the highest mean seed yield was recorded in Pea 88 (1478 kg/ha) followed by BARI Garden pea-3 (1298 kg/ha). Early-97 produced the highest number of pods per plant (6.74) whereas the lowest number (5.80) counted in BARI Garden pea-3. The highest plant height was observed in Early-97 (90.80 cm) followed by Pea-88 (52.80 cm) while the highest mean100 seed weight (24 g) was recorded BARI Garden pea-3 followed by Pea-88. The short duration lines Pea-88, 34223, and Early-97 can be selected in between T. aman and T. aus rice for vegetable or seed purposes as a relay or sole crop.

Objectives:

To find out the short duration and/or long-duration lines with economically important traits for releasing as a variety in the rice-based cropping system.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at OFRD, Pabna and RARS, Jessore during rabi 2015-16 with four genotypes of pea to identify high yielding genotypes for fitting in between a man and boro/aus rice. The genotypes were Early-97, 34223, Pea-88 and BARI Motorshuti 3. The experiment was laid down in an RCB design with three replications. Plot size was 6 rows x 4m length with a line to line spacing of 40 cm and plant to plant 10 cm. The seed was sown on 15 November at Jessore and 3 December at the Pabna location. Post sowing irrigation was given to ensure seed germination. Data was recorded on quantitative traits from five randomly selected plants. Data were analyzed using PLABSTAT computer software

The highest mean seed yield was recorded in Pea 88 (1478 kg/ha) closely followed by BARI Garden pea-3 (1298 kg/ha). The highest mean 100 seed weight (24.8 g) was recorded in BARI Motorshuti-3 followed by Pea-88. Pea-88 was earlier (71 days) among the genotypes. The highest mean seed yield was recorded in Pea 88 (1478 kg/ha) followed by BARI Motorshuti-3 (1298 kg/ha). Early-97 produced the highest number of pods per plant (6.74) whereas the lowest number (5.80) counted in BARI Garden pea-3. The highest plant height was observed in Early-97 (90.80 cm) followed by Pea-88 (52.80 cm). The short duration line Pea-88, 34223 and Early-97 can be selected in between T. aman and T. aus rice for vegetable or seed purposes as a relay or sole crop. Based on the results, among the early genotypes, Early-97 and Pea 88 could be selected for testing in the appropriate cropping patterns in the farmer’s field for final evaluation before releasing as varieties.
