Screening of Lentil Lines Against Stemphylum Blight (2015--2016)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present screening was conducted with 10 accessions based on the previous trial for Stemphylium Blight (SB) resistance. These accessions were screened in natural field environments, to identify resistance sources for potential use in lentil breeding. Lentil variety BARI Masur-1 (susceptible) was used as a check with consistent results throughout the experiment. The highest frequency of resistance to SB was found in LT-07 (1) followed by BLX-06004-12 (1.6), BLX-06004-2 (2.3) and LR-9-25 (2.6). The highest yield (1080.3 kg/ha) was produced by the entry LT-07 which is statistically similar to the yield (1052.9 kg/ha) of the entries BLX-06004-2 and LR-9-25L. Upon further trial, these sources can potentially be used to develop new commercial cultivars with SB disease resistance.

Objectives:

The present study was conducted to continue the search for resistant genotypes against SB disease of lentil in a natural environment

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Center and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna, during 2015-16. Ten lentils advanced entries viz. BLX-09015-2, BLX-09001, LR-9- 25, BLX-06004-2, BLX-06004-12, LRIL22-133, LRIL22-70, LT-07, LT-06 and LT-08 were collected from the Genetic and plant breeding division, Pulses Research Cente, Ishurdi, Pabna. Each line was sown in a single row of 4m length allowing a susceptible check (BARI Masur-1) after every 2 test lines with continuous sowing of seed. Three replications were used having a line-to-line distance of 40 cm. The seeds were sown on November 8, 2015. Infected crop debris from the previous year was spread between rows to build up Stemphylium inocula. The experiment was monitored regularly to observe stemphylium blight disease. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The disease severity was scored according to 0-5 scale (Bakr and Ahmed 1992) where 0 = no infection (HR), 1 = a 146 few scattered leaf infections but no twig blighted (R), 2 = 5–10% leaflet infection and/or a few scattered (1%) twigs blighted (MR), 3 = 11–20% leaflet infection and/or 1–5% twigs blighted (MS), 4 = 21–50% leaflet infection and/or 6–10% twigs blighted (S), and 5 = 51% leaflet infection and/or = 10% twigs blighted (HS).The data were analyzed statistically using GenStat version 18.

Achievement/Findings:

The screening result revealed a significant difference among the lines which became well pronounced in all the tested parameters. All the test entries varied significantly considering their disease severity and yield. The lowest stemphylium blight disease severity was recorded in LT-07 (1) followed by BLX-06004-12 (1.6), BLX-06004-2 (2.3), and LR-9-25 (2.6). The highest severity (5) was in BARI Masur-1 and BLX-09015-2. The highest yield (1080.3 kg/ha) was produced by the entry LT-07 which is statistically similar to the yield (1052.9 kg/ha) of the entry BLX-06004-2 and LR-9- 25. Disease severity was higher level in the check entry and in some test entries. Four lentil lines viz. LT-07, BLX-06004-12, BLX-06004-2, and LR-9-25 have the potential to continue research in regards to breeding for stemphylium disease resistance. The results from the present study would contribute to relevant scientific knowledge that will help with the development of an effective breeding strategy for SB resistance in lentil
