An experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Agrotechnology Discipline, Khulna University, Khulna during Aman Season, 2005 to study the effect of nitrogen on the performance of a local rice variety, *Bapui Aus'. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). There were five different levels of nitrogen viz 0, 20, 40, 60, and 80 kg N ha-1. The treatments were replicated three times. At maturity, data were collected on plant height, yield, and yield attributes. There was a significant difference among the treatments for all the parameters studied. The highest plant height, effective fillers hill-1, panicle length, filled grains panicle, 1000-grain weight, grain yield, and harvest index were obtained when nitrogen was applied @ 80 kg ha-1. The treatments are 60 and 80 kg N ha-1 gave statistically similar results except for filled grains panicle-1. For all the studied parameters the lowest performance was shown by the control treatment. Grain yield was well correlated with filled grains panicle-1 and harvest index.

To find out the effect of Nitrogen on the Performance of Bapui Aus in Aman Season.

A field experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Agrotechnology Discipline, Khulna University. Khulna during Aman Season (June-December) in 2005. The experimental plot is situated in the Agro-ecological Zone (AEZ) 13. The experimental field was typical rice growing medium-high land. Bapui Aus, an extensively cultivated non-aromatic local rice variety of this region, was selected for the present study. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Five levels of nitrogen formed the treatment variable. So, there were 15 plots. Unit plot size was 4 m x 3 in. The treatments were as follows:  N0 = 0 kg N ha-1 (Control), N20= 20 kg Nha-1, N40= 40 kg N ha-1, N60= 60 kg N ha-1 and N80= 80 kg N ha-1. In addition, basal doses of TSP and MP were applied @ 50 kg ha-1 and 35 kg ha-1, respectively. Nitrogen was applied in the form of urea. Urea was top-dressed in three equal splits. The main field was prepared by a power tiller and ladder before 15 days of transplanting. It was ploughed sufficiently in order to make the soil ready for transplanting. Weeds and stubbles were removed and the field was then divided into unit plots that 35 were spaded one day before transplanting for incorporating the basal fertilizers. Transplanting was done with 35-days the old seedlings using 3 seedlings per hill maintaining 25 cm x 20 cm spacing. Gap filling was done with the same aged seedling within one week of transplanting. The weeding operation was done twice manually. There is no requirement for irrigation as it is cultivated in the rainy season. Due to heavy rainfall drainage was done as and when necessary. For controlling insects Dimethoate 40 EC @ 0.05% was applied. The crop was harvested when 90% of the seeds turned into golden yellow color. Harvested crops were threshed and the seed cleaned. The grain weight for each plot was recorded after proper drying in the sun and then converted into tons per hectare. The grain yield was adjusted to 14% moisture content. Before harvesting, randomly selected five sample hills from each plot were cut from the basal portion carefully for collecting data on yield contributing characters and plant height. To avoid border effect plants were sampled from any of the inner rows. Yield contributing data were recorded from five randomly selected hills in each plot. Grain yields were recorded from the whole plot basis and were expressed in tons per hectare. The 1000-grain weight was taken by using an electric balance from dried grain samples of each unit plot. For data collection, the following parameters were considered- Plant height (cm) at harvest, Number of effective tillers hill-1, Panicle length at maturity (cm), Filled grains panicle-1, Weight of 1000-grains (g), Grain yield (t ha-1), Straw yield, Harvest index (%) The collected data on different parameters were analyzed following the analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique by using an MSTAT-C computer program. Means were compared by the least significance difference (LSD) test. Functional relationships between yield parameters were determined using simple correlation and regression analysis.

It was observed that plant height increased gradually with higher  N  levels. Plant height in the experiment ranged from 79.83 to 91.75 cm. The tallest plant height (91.75  cm)  was produced by 80  kg  N  ha-1  which was statistically similar to 60 kg N ha-1. The lowest height (79.83 cm) was produced by the plants receiving no nitrogen. An appreciable difference was not observed in plant height among the treatments 0, 20, and 40 kg N. The increased plant height might be due to the increased level of cell division in the rice plant at higher nitrogen doses. They reported that plant height increased with increasing rates of N application.
