Background: Folk ayurvedic pratitioners are the primary health care providers in rural population in Bangladesh.in Bengali term; these medicinal practitioners are known as “Kavirajes”. Ayurvedic studies are an important feature of traditional medicinal practices in Bangladesh. The major characteristic that separates the folk medicinal practitioners from other systems of existing medicinal practices is their almost exclusive use of simple preparations of medicinal plants for treatment of various ailments. The objective of this study was to make a comparative analysis of reported ethnomedicinal uses of plants used by a folk medicinal practitioner (Kaviraj) of paramtala village of Muradnagar Upazila in comilla district, Bangladesh. Methods: Interviews of the Kaviraj were carried out with the help of a semistructured questionnaire and the guided field-walk method. Results: The Kaviraj used 12 plants distributed into 10 families in his formulations. Available ethnomedicinal and scientific reports show that the plants used by the Kaviraj can be validated in their uses on the basis of either ethnomedicinal consensus or pharmacological activity studies. Conclusion: The study suggests that the medicinal plants used by the Kaviraj of Comilla district have good probability of new drug discoveries.

These survey are enabling us to build up a comprehensive data base of the medicinal plants of the country. Since Bangladesh has over 86,000 villages, with nearly each village containing one or more Kavirajes depending on the village population, it is important to survey as many villages as possible to get a comprehensive view of medicinal plant usage by the Kavirajes. It was the objective of the present study to document the medicinal plants and formulations of folk medicinal practitioner (Kaviraj) of paramtala village of Muradnagar Upazila in Comilla district.

Muradnagar Upazila is a part of Comilla district, which falls in the central part of Bangladesh. The main occupation of the people of this sub-district is agriculture. However, to a certain extent the area is also noted for its local handicrafts. The present survey was conducted in the village of Paramtala in the sub-district of Muradnagar, in Comilla district. Prior Informed Consent was first obtained from the Kaviraj, Shamsul Fokir, Age 49 years, practicing in Paramtala village of Muradnagar Upazila, in Comilla district, Bangladesh. The Kaviraj was thoroughly apprised as to the nature of our visit and consent obtained to disseminate any information both nationally and internationally. Actual interviews were conducted in the Bengali language, which was spoken fluently by the Kaviraj as well as the interviewers. The interviews were conducted with the help of a semi-structured questionnaire and the guided field-walk method of Martin [30] and Maundu. [31] In this method the Kaviraj took the interviewers on guided field-walks through areas from where he collected his medicinal plants, pointed out the plants, and described their uses. All plant specimens were photographed and collected on the spot, pressed, dried and brought back to Bangladesh National Herbarium at Dhaka for identification.

It is concluded that the practices of traditional medicinal practitioners should not be discarded by modern scientists. In our present survey study it revealed that the kaviraj Shamsul Fokir used some important natural ayurvedic plants for various ailments in Paramtala village of Muradnagar Upazila in Comlla district. The formulation of the present studies are resemblances with so many others village practitioners strategy in Bangladesh. with this study of survey to find out some important formula for new drug discoveries and for new formulation way by which plants are contains various compounds like their phytochemistry was so much helpful for future ethnobotanical research in worldwide.
