This study was conducted to find out the adaptation strategies with waterlogging conditionin in Beel Kapalia region of Bangladesh. Waterlogging areas are increasing day-by-day due to complex hydro-geophysical reasons. Beel Kapalia of Manirampur Upazila (Jashore) is mainly a unique and sensitive fertile region in terms of ecology and environment. Supper cyclone SIDR (2007) and AILA (2009) were severely responsible for waterlogging condition. This study helped to understand the socio-economic situation in Beel Kapalia region under waterlogging condition. To cope with existing ecosystem, Bangladesh Water Development Board took the Tidal River Management project to mitigate the waterlogging problem. About 67% people perceived that the Tidal River Management program was good, but it was harmful only for 33% people. Apart from that, during flood and waterlogged condition, cultivation system was seriously disrupted. To ameliorate this problem, various types of coping strategies such as floating agriculture, mixed culture, hanging vegetable culture, shrimp culture were practiced. Moreover, saline tolerant rice varieties and sunflower were also introduced. Finally, it is high time to undertake more awareness building program among the affected communities and there is a need to regularly monitor the existing environment.

The objectives of this study were to find out the strategies taken for copping with the waterlogging condition.

Description of the Study Area The study area is situated at Bhabodah area in Manirampur Upazila under Jashore District located in the village Kapalia with Kapalia Beel. This floodplain area is under a sever waterlogging condition from some decades. The area is characterized by morphologically active tidal rivers and creeks, which provide drainage for a system of embanked hydrological units. The main river system in the study area is the Mukteshwari-Hari river system. There are several channels in this study area which are important for drainage (sediment management option). This area suffers from waterlogging problem due to tidal inundation, tropical cyclones, heavy rainfall, flood and salinity intrusion. The area is bounded by the Teka, Shri, Bhadra and Mukteshwari rivers.

Survey Methods and Time of Survey Reconnaissance survey (preliminary field investigation) were conducted during the early stage of the study. It was helpful to identify the proper location where the research was conducted. To achieve the stated objectives, primary data were collected from the study area by using mixed approach. The data were collected from 1 December, 2016 to 31 March 2017. This time was selected because the time was most favourable for data collection. The days were sunny and clear.

Primary Data Primary data were collected mainly through questionnaire survey. Different types of information were collected from the local people. The questionnaire was close ended in nature. The close ended questions suggested a set of alternative answers from which the respondents were asked to choose the one that most closely symbolizes their view.

Secondary Data Secondary data are collected by someone else and which have already been passed through the statistical process. For collecting secondary data, some sources were searched as books, journals, unpublished thesis, newspapers and periodicals, website, Central Library of Jashore Uiversity of Science and Technology, Public Libraray of Dhaka and the Public Library of Jashore.

Data Analysis The data were verified both qualitatively and quantitatively. All questionnaires filled up in a day was checked on that day to check the missing information. The household was justified in the final stage if any inconsistency was encountered. Microsoft Excel (Office 2007) was used for some data analysis, if needed.

The waterlogging problem of Beel Kapalia area is well known. This was a human induced developed hazards which changed the natural and socioeconomic condition of the area. Obviously, the livelihood security is threatened. To adapt with the waterlogging situation, people took several adaptation strategies to lead their lives in a good way. They used to cultivate different types of mixed cropping systems. Due to waterlogging condition, people can not cultivate agricultural products frequently and they were involved in cultivating saline tolerant crop variesties such as BR 11, BRRI 33 etc. The farmers tried to cultivate sunflower in a large scale in arable land after harvesting one crop. Apart from that, they cultivated mixed vegetables and hanging vegetables. People used to practice floating agriculture extensively to gain enough benefits for better lives. In addition, most of the farmers converted their agricultural land to shrimp culture as well as seasonal fish cultivation. These type of adaptation strategy was required to lead their lives with the existing situation and therefore to cope with the cliamate change in future.
