Studies on the Colour Fastness of Silk Fabrics Dyed with Primary Colours.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was undertaken to find out a suitable method so as to ensure fast colour in Silk fabrics. Initially the works were conducted with three primary colours like Red, Blue and Yellow. Samples were subjected to degumming al three different levels, such as : partial, medium and full. Then dyed with different dyes at 2%, 3% and 4% concentrations. Full degumming samples showed better colour fastness with 4% dyes at 80 minutes boiling duration than medium and light degumming at the same conditions. Recommendations made to use full degummed silk fabrics boiled at 95°C for 80 minutes (60 minutes before acid treatment and another 20 minutes after acid treatment) for better migration of the dye particles to ensure good dyeing and achieve better fastness with primary dyes.

Objectives:

To find out a suitable standard procedure for application and evaluate the three primary days on silk fabrics to achieve fast colour which is urgent need of the industry.

Methodology:

Silk being a natural polyamide or polypeptide fibre, it's dyeing properties approximately vary upon the twist per inch. For this experiment Silk fabrics of the following specification were used; Warp/inch = 96 nos. (two ply organzine twisted Silk) Weft/inch = 80 nos. (two ply tram twisted Silk). Three primary colour viz : polar Red -RS (Siba-Gaigy), Cyanine Blue-G (Siba-Gaigy), and Neolan Yellow - GR (Siba-Gaigy) each at 2%, 3% and 4% concentration were used. Raw Silk fabrics were cutdown into pices of 15" X 15 "size, then subjected to degum at three levels: (i) partial / light degumming (40% - 60%), the sample boiled in' 2g soap soda / litre solution for 30 minutes, (ii) medium degumming (60% -80%), using 4g soap soda/litre solution for 45 minutes and (iii) full degumming (80% 100%), by using 6g soap soda/litre solution for 60 minutes with little hydresulphite (Ig /l).

Achievement/Findings:

The results of this experiment may be adopted in commercial scale to ensure fast colour in silk fabrics while using Polar Red (Rs), Cyanine Blue (G) and Neolan Yellow (GR) dye stuff, a product of Siba-Gaigy.
