A Survey of Weed Flora of Some Mulberry Fields in Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey was conducted to study the occurrence of weed flora grown in 5 (five) mulberry gardens of Bangladesh. Collected weeds were classified into H3 species belonging to 49 families. Out of 113 species. Among the monocot species, 17 species are common to almost all the five gardens . single species of monocot group Curcuma amada was detected in Dinajpur nursery only. Two species of non flowering plants also specifically found in Dinajpur nursery only. Cyperus rotundus of Cyperaceae and Cyftodon dactylon of Gramineae pose the real menace to the mulberry tields. C. rotundus occurs abundantly during April-June season. They regenerate more quickly when damaged during the course of weeding. In this study C- rotundus has been found to be present upto depth of 25cm while Ono (19651 found them under the depth of 30cm. C. dactylon. on the other hand, has an extensive creeping base and occurs in all the four seasons. Two species of non flowering plants were detected, one fungus and the other is pteridophyte. Among the rest, 92 species are of dicot group and 19 species are of monocot group.

Objectives:

To make a comprehensive survey of weed flora grown in some mulberry fields in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The weeds from mulberry gardens of four Sericulture nurseries located at Nawab-ganj) Mirganjj Ishurdi and Dinajpur and Bangladesh Sericulture Research and Training Institute Rajshahi were collected during four seasons viz. January-March, April-June. July-September and October-December, in 1988. Collected specimens were dried and pressed and preserved in herberium sheets They were duly identified from the Department of Botany, University of Rajshahi. The density of the population of two highly obnoxious abundant weeds were also studied.

Achievement/Findings:

Out of 92 dicot weed species 48 species have been found common in all five gardens studied and six species are confined to three gardens out of five. 12 weed species are found confined to two gardens out of five. Besides six species viz. Cardiospermum helicacabum, Mikania scandens, Sonchus asper, Tridas procumbent, Campenula colorata and scopariadulcis are found specially in Rajshahi. Two species viz., Passiflora foetide & Xanthium strumerium are specific for Mirganj garden four species viz.; Crozophora plicata, Ichnocurpous frutescens, Hydrolea zeylanica and Lippia nodiflora are specific for Nwabganj nursery. Cocculus sp. Ludwigia perviflora, Boerhavia repens, Glycosmis pentaphylla, Ceceli sp. And Celsia coromondaliana are specifically found in Ishurdi nursery. Fumeria indica, Ammannia buccifera, Tephrosia purpurea, Uraria picta and Wahlembergia gracilis are specific for Dinajpur nursery only.
