Efficacy of Different Alkali Solutions on Silk Reeling Under Cold Condition.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Instead of using heat energy cocoons were treated with 6 different media, namely Dried Banana tree ash, Mulberry branch ash Soap + Sodium carbonate, Sodium bi-carbonate, Ammonium hydroxide and Soap + Sodium acetate with 5 (Five) different concentrations, like 2g/l, 4g/l, 6 g/l 8 g/I. and 10 g/l under 1h, 2h. 3h and 4h soaking period. Out of the six media, dried banana tree ash gave better results in silk recovery (90.78%) and less Elament breakage (0.40/Coccon) under concentration of 8 gll and 2h soaking period; There was no change in the fibroin and sericin content of the silk in the above treatment when compared to control. Recommendation has been made to use banana tree ash for better silk recovery with concentration 8 g/l under 2h soaking period.

Objectives:

To find out suitable method for reeling silk from cocoons without using any heat energy for quality silk production.

Methodology:

Indigenous multivoltine cocoons collected from silkworm section of BSRTI, Rajshahi were used for the study. Cocoons were dried and reeled in cold condition using the following alkali materials; L Banana tree ash. 2, Mulberry branch ash, 3, Soap + sodium carbonate, 4. Sodium carbonate, 4. Sodium bi-carbon ate, 5. Ammonium hydroxide 6. Soap + sodium acetate. Alkali media were prepared at g/l denoted by C1,C2,C3,C4 and C5 respectively. The pH value of different solutions were soaked for 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, and 5 hours duration at room temperature. After completion of soaking period five cocoons were reeled individually at room temperature by using single cocoon reeling machine in the same alkaline solution. Finally the reeled silk was washed in water and dried. Reeling characters such as length of filament weight of silk weight of pupa and frequency of breakages wee recorded for all treatments. The percentage of silk recovery from single cocoon was calculated by the formula: Silk recovery (%)= (filament weight/ shell weight) X100. A control reeling was also done in hot water. Sericin and fibroin was estimated following the method of Orlandi (1954) and Quader et al (1989).

Banana tree ash (8 g/l, 2h soaking duration) is superior to other for higher silk recovery percentage and less filament breakage which indicates the improvement of economic reeling, Besides this silk fiber is not affected by banana tree ash solution in comparison to that of hot water reeled silk i, e, control, which indicates that the quality of silk is unchanged chemically by banana tree ash media which may be tried in large scale reeling.
