Influence of Leaf Physio-anatomical Characters on Yield Potentiality in Mulberry.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Correlation and path coefficient analysis were carried out on 19 mulberry genotypes consisting of 10 India and 9 exotic collections to find out the influence of leaf physio-anatomical characters on leaf production in mulberry. Genotypic correlation coefficients of specific leaf weight and stomatal length with leaf yield/metre of shoot were found positive and significant. Corresponding phenotypic values of these two characters were also positive and moderate. Relationship between leaf area/metre of shoot and leaf yield/metre of shoot was also found positive at both the levels. Path coefficient analysis revealed that stomatal length exhibited high positive and specific leaf weight showed moderate positive direct effect on leaf yield per metre of shoot. But leaf area/metre of shoot showed low positive direct effect on it. Influence of stomatal width and stomatal frequency were not found in a considerable amount. Specific leaf weight which is easy to measure can be taken as a selection criterion along with the other morphological characters

Objectives:

To bridge the gap important anatomical and physiological characters like specific leaf weight, leaf area/metre of shoot etc. have been considered to detect the correlation with leaf yield per metre of shoot. As the direct relation among the total leaf yield per plant and physio-anatomical character may not give a clear picture, the leaf yield per unit length of shoot has been considered as the end product for the study.

Methodology:

Nineteen mulberry genotypes consisting for 9 exotic and 10 Indian collections maintained in the germplasm plot of CSR&TI, Mysore, India were used for this study. Five plants from each genotype were selected to represent the overall variability. Each individual plant was treated as replicate. The plants were maintained under 180cm x 180cm spacing with normal cultural practices. The experiment was conducted for one full growing season covering entire physiological period ie. from one pruning to another covering four harvests. Data were recorded on different leaf characters viz., stomatal length, stomatal width, stomatal frequency, specific leaf weight, leaf area/metre of shoot and leaf weight per metre of shoot length. For stomatal study fully expanded leaves with high turgidity were selected and a thin film of quick fix was applied on the lower surface of the leaf blade. Stomatal impressions were peeled out and frequency was determined observing 10 microscopic fields from each plant. The average length and width was also calculated by measuring the length and width of 10 stomata of each plant of a variety using ocular micrometer. For specific leaf weight, 10 leaf discs of 1 cm² made by cork borer were collected from the 5th and the 6th leaves from the top of 5 selected plants of each variety and were oven dried at 60⁰C for 48 hours. After complete drying the weight was recorded and the specific leaf weight was calculated by using the proper formula. Variance and covariance were done from the mean values by using the method used for completely randomized design. Phenotypic and genotypic correlation coefficients for all possible combinations were calculated from variance and covariance components following AL-Jibouri et at (1958) and path coefficient analysis was done at the genotypic level following Dewey and Lu (1959).

Achievement/Findings:

Specific leaf weight showed a good genotypic correlation as well as high direct effect on leaf yield per metre of shoot. Indirect effect of any other character was not found to be of significant in nature. Hence it can be safely concluded that among the different leaf characters, specific leaf weight which is easy to measure can be taken as a selection criterion along with other morphological characters.
