Effect of Some Formulated Chemical Composites for Controlling Bacterial and Viral Diseases of Silkworm, Bombyx Mori. L.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Attempts were carried out to combat tae malady of bacterial and viral diseases of silkworm Bombyx mori L through system¬atic application of some formulated comp¬osites on the larval body and beds. Among the such tested composites combinations of lime + paraformaldehyde + sodium benzoate (94 : 3 : 3) and lime+paraformaldehyde + benzoic acid (95 : 3 : 2) resulted in an overall decrease of 16.5% and 15.4% viral mortality over non-treated control batch. These two composites also significantly improved the effective rate of rearing- For, bacterial disease control, however, the tested composites showed insignificant impact.

Objectives:

To sort out effective composites suitable for bacterial and viral disease control under Bangladeshi environment.

Methodology:

Ten chemical composites in the forrr of dusts were formulated with the following ingredients (w/w): A. Lime powder 97% paraformaldehyde 3%. B. Lime powder 94%, paraformaldehyde 3% and sodium benzoat 3% C. Lirne Powder 95%, paraformaldehyde 3% and Benzoic acid 2%. D. Lime powder 92% Paraformaldehyde 3% and sodium benzoat 5%. E. Lime powder 92% paraformaldehyde 3% and Boric aeid 5%. F. Lime powder 89%t Paraformaldehyde 3% sodium benzoate 3% and sodium carbonate 5%. G Lime powder 90%, Paratormaldehyde 3% Benzoic acid 2% and Boric acid 5%. H. Lime powder 89% Paraforrraldehyde 3% sodium benzoat 3% and Boric acid 5%. I. Lime powder 90%. Paraformaldehyde 3%. Benzole acid 2% and sodium carbonate 5%. The ingredients wrer thoroughly mixed and preserved in arirtighyt polythene packets before and after use. after bed cleaning the silkworm (3rd instar to 5th intar) were uniformly dusted with respective composites through fine cloth dustger. The application was done once in 3rd instar (after second moult) twice in 4th instar (once after 3rd moult and the other on the 3rd day) and thrice in 5th instar (once in every alternate day). All the treatments were replicated into three individual lots with 300 silkworms. Observation on the viral and bacterial moratalities, effective rate of rearing and average cocoon weight were separately recorded. The experiment was repeated in two seasons March 1987 (s1) and June (S2). The treatments were conducted on a local multivoltine race Nistari, Viral diseases considered in this experiment were NPV CPV and gattin while bacterial diseases were sotto, septicemia and gastro enteric.

Achievement/Findings:

Chmnaswamy-et al (1986) reported that Combination of paraformaldehyde and benzoic acid along with lime (2:2: 96) on regular use reduced silkworm mortality and improved other economic characters, which is in agreement with the present findings. For bacterial control all the composites were proved to be ineffective. However, the result of this experiment may be tried in large scale rearing for controlling only viral diseases of silkworm.
