Selection of Superior Multivoltine X Bivoltine F1 Hybrids Against Npv Disease of Silkworm, Bomboyx Mori L.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

15 crosses were made from tine (female) and 5 bivoltine (male) races. Nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV was induced artificially and reared under four different environmental conditions. Statisti¬cal analysis indicated highly significant difference due to NPV mortality total mortality; percent cocoon harvest and single cocoon weight among different crosses and under different environments. The hybrids Nistari(M) x BY (P) and BSR-3 x Zianshu 12 (P) are recommended for Agrahayan; 2 hybrids, Nistari (M)x BV (P) and Nistari (M)x RB-112 for chaita; 2 hybrids, Nistari (S)x Zianshu 12 (P) & Nistari (S) x RB-112 for Jaistha, and 2 hybrids, Nistari (Mi x RB-112 & 3 x RB-112 were found feasible for Bhaduri seasons based on the resultant least susceptibility to NPV induction.

Objectives:

To select superior Multivotine x Bivoltine hybrids combination against NPV diseases.

Methodology:

Three multivoltine and 6ve Bivoltine silkworm races were collected from the germ plasm bank of Bangladesh Sericulture Research & Training Institute, Rajshahi. The races were? : Group. A. (Multivoltine female). 1 Nistari 'M) 2 Nistari (S) 3 BSR-3 Group. B. (Rivoltipe male). 1. Zianshu 12 (?) 2 Dong-^ I 3 B. V. fP) 4. FB-112 5. RBSB, Fifteen F1 hybrids were made out of eight races before each rearing. The races of the group A are strictly indigenous and homozygous having capacity to resist high temperature and high humidity, but poor in silk content while the races of group B are exotic, relatively susceptible to high temper¬ature and high humidity but are rich in silk content. The experiment was conducted under the natural climate of four seasons. Fifteen laying of each cross were prepared examined and brushed for rearing -"before each seasons, After second moult, worms were replicate with 300 worms each. he worms were subjected to low tempera¬ture (5"c for 24 for artificial reactivation of the disease as per technique used by Aruga and Arai (1959) and Aizawa et al i96l). Observation on the NPV mortality 5 total mortality percent cocoon harvest & Average cocoon weight (g) were estimated for each cross. Selection of suitable hybrids were made on the basis of least NPV mortality max¬imum percent cocoon harvest & maximum estimated cocoon yield per 100 dfls, The estimated cocoon yield was calculated by the following formula. Achievement/Findings:

The hybrids 3 (Nistari (M) x BV (P) and LI BSR 3 x Zianshu 12 (P) may be recommended for Agrahayani; hybrids 3 (Nistari (M) x BV(P) and 4 (Nistari (M) x RB-112) for chaita; hybrids 9 (Nistari (S) x BR-H2) and 6 (Nistari (S) x Zianshu 12 (P) for Jaistha and hybrids 4 (Nistari (M) x H2) and M (BSR 3x BR 112) for Bhaduri. It is worthy to mention that the hybrids tested in this experiment were screened under the induced conditions and therefore, expected to exhibit better performance under natural condition.
