Studies of Leaf Yield and Nutritive Value in Different Cultivation from of Bsrm-5 Variety of Mulberry.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In order to investigate the suitable form of cultivation for better leaf yield per unit area and good nutritional food values for silkworm, Bombyx mori L. an experi¬ment was conducted under bush, low-cut and tree systems of plantation. Leaf yield and nutritional values of bush low-cut and tree were found to be significantly different. Higher leaf yield (22.21ml/ha/year) was found in low-cut than those of tree (20.64 mt/ha/yr) & bush (14.50 mt/ha/yr). Leaves harvested from bush contained higher moisture (76.44%) and mineral (10.45%) contents followed by Low-cut and tree but leaves harvested from tree contained higher amount of crude protein (19.60%), total sugar (3.43%), reducing sugar (1.10%), starch (13.59%) and soluble carbohydrate (17.03%) contents followed by low-cut and bush- Seasonal effects were also found to be significant both for leaf yield and leaf nutrients.

Objectives:

To evaluate the quantitative and qualitative status of mulberry leaves raised under different forms of cultivation in different seasons of the year.

Methodology:

The mulberry variety, BSRM-5 raised in three forms viz,; bush, lowcut and tree on sandy-clay-loam soil at the Bangladesh Sericulture Research and Training Institute(BSRTI) Rajshahi, were used, Standard agronomical practices for rainfed condition were followed for all forms. Five years old bush, low cut and tree plot were s-elected In case of bush 45cm x 8cm for lowcut TSm x 1.5m and for tree forms 3.0mx3.0m spacing, were practiced. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. Leaves were harvested by pruning the whole shoots each after three months interval synchronized with the four commercial silkworm rearing seasons in Bangladesh, i.e; a) February-March (Sj 1 b) May-Jure S2) c) August-September (S3) d) November-December (S4") Leaf yield was calculated on the basis of weight of total number of leaves per shoot. For nutritional analysis leaf samples were weighed, dried in an oven at 80 pc until constant weight was obtained, desiccated and moisture content was deter¬mined. The dried leaves were powdered and stored for chemical analysis. The quality of leaves were determined by estimating crude protein, mineral, total sugar, reducing sugar, starch and soluble carbohydrate contents according to the procedures of AOAC (1980). The simple correlation coefficients of mulberry leaf yield with its nutrients were computed according to steel and Torrie (1960).

Achievement/Findings:

The leaf yield was significantly and positively correlated with moisture but crude protein and total sugar was negatively associated with minerals and starch for good cocoon crop production. Therefore it may be suggested that leaves from bush and low-cut may be used for feeding young stage and those 3 from, tree for the late stage of silkworm rearing.
