Reeling Performance and Quality Raw Silk Production: 1. Fabrication of Improved Cottage Reeling Machine.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To enhance raw silk productivity and improve quality as international standards Bangladesh Sericulture Research and training Institute( BSRTI) fabricated an improved cottage reeling machine. This fabricated machine was installed both in lab and field levels and conducted series of trials on reeling performance and produced raw silk characteristics in four different seasons compared with cottage basin, Both lab and field level results revealed that there was a stark improvement in renditta, raw silk recovery %, relability %, denier, size deviation, tenacity and elongation % of raw silk reeled on improved cottage reeling machine than cottage basin. Therefore, it is suggested that for quantity and quality raw silk production BSRTI improved cottage reeling machine may be commercially used in the field level.

Objectives:

To produce quality raw silk from commercially available multivoltine hybrid/ bivoltine cocoons with much variations in sizes.

Methodology:

The improved cottage reeling machine (Double basin) has been incorporated with the following features: Main body frame of machine, Reeling basin, Side brushing chamber, Jetteboute, Porcelain buttons, Croissure, pulleys Traverse mechanism, Reel. Experimental works: The reeling performance and quality raw silk was produced both in the lab and field level by using multivoltine hybrid cocoons used improved cottage reeling machine and cottage basin. The fabricated improved cottage reeling machine was installed at BSRTI lab and two other locations in the field level like DIDP reeling center at Bogra and Caritas reeling center at Dinajpur. The latter two reeling center were designated as DIDPRC and CRC respectively. The experiment was conducted taking thirty samples of green cocoons (consisting 1 kg sample each) collected from the field level in each season and distributed ten samples for each location to determine the cocoon characteristics and reeling performances on improved cottage reeling machine. The study was conducted in four different silkworm rearing seasons viz. Chaita, Jaishta, Bhaduri and Agrahyani 2002 designated as S1; 82, S3 and S4 seasons respectively. The collected cocoon samples were dried in a hot air dryer following the methods of Subhas et al. (1994). After drying, cocoon samples were stored in storage racks for two days before reeling (Sonwalkar et al. 1990). Fifty cocoons from each sample were reeled for single cocoon filament length, dropping and denier test in every season. The cocoon characteristics and reeling performances like defective cocoon (DFC) %, single cocoon weight (SCW), single shell weight (SSW), raw silk %, raw silk recovery %, reelability %, filament length (FL), non-breakable filament (NBFL), single filament denier (SFD) and renditta were determined according to Sonwalkar (1988) and Shamachary (1986). The raw silk produced from the study was tested for different quality parameters as per standard methods.

The Bangladesh Sericulture Research and training Institute( BSRTI) fabricated improved cottage reeling machine may be used commercially as an appropriate reeling device for production of quality and quantity raw silk with the available quality cocoons in all seasons of Bangladesh.
