Study on Seasonal Performance in Silkworm Seed Cocoon Rearing.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Silkworm seed cocoon performance rearing with a local and an improved race in nursery condition exhibited a wide range of seasonal variation. Both the races showed better achievement in Ashwani and poor result in Baishakhi seed crop. The ranges of variations were 39.48% in single cocoon wt., 58.22% in single shell wt., 37.47% in facundity and 24.41% in filament length.

Objectives:

To see the seasonal impact on rearing performance on different cocoon characters at nursery level.

Methodology:

Two races, namely, Nishtari and BSRI-83/2 were used in the study. Nistari is an indigenous silkworm race reared in the subcontinent from ancient times. BSRI-83/2 is an improved race evolved from BSRTI. The combination of these two races was popular hybrid for commercial rearing during the study period. Both the races could withstand unfavorable climatic conditions. Rearing was conducted in four seasons viz., Baishaki, Ashari, Ashwani and Maghi within a year and the seasons were represented as Si, S2, S3 and S4, respectively. Rearing was done in Mirgonj sericulture nursery in 1995 & 1996 under normal temperature and humidity conditions with possible manual manipulation. During rearing, temperature and humidity were prevailed in SI 33.70°C and 69%, in S2 32.77°C and 82%, in S3 32.19°C and 84% and in S4 26.76°C and 79%, respectively, inside the rearing room. At that time, outside temperature and humidity recorded were 37.50°C and 60%, 35.52°C and 80%, 35.30°C and 82% and 29.57°C and 73%, respectively. In each season 50 DFLs of each race was brushed separately. From first to second instar rearing was done in mass bed. After second moult 3-replications of 300 larvae of each race was counted and reared upto spinning in separate bed. Rearings were done in randomized block design following standard rearing procedures (Krishnaswami, 1978). Data on different economic parameters were collected as follows:! The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

From the study, it is conclusive that in majority of the economic traits, Ashwani seed rearing showed better results compared to other seasons. In Ashari and Maghi, there were an up-down trend in the achievement of the parameters. But overall performance of Maghi was better than Ashari, Performance of Baishakhi was poor among all the seasons in most of the economic traits. Further, for better quality and quantity of seed cocoon and DFLs production is adverse climatic seasons it may be suggested to maintain the microclimates in the rearing house in such a way that optimum environmental condition would prevail, which is required for the successful crop harvest and dfls production.
