Economics of Mulberry Tree Cultivation Under Rain Fed Condition.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two sets of experiments, one with chemical fertilizers and other with cultural practices were 'conducted at BSKTI, Rajshahi during 1990-93 to find out the effect of chemical fertilizers, digging and weeding on leaf yield and its economics in rainfed mulberry tree cultivation. Chemical fertilizers and digging + weeding showed significant role for the production of higher leaf yield in mulberry. Among all the treatments 95g Urea + 47.5g TSP + 35g MP plant/year in 2 split doses gave maximum leaf yield per plant with minimum cost. In another experiment 4 times digging + weeding gave the highest leaf yield in comparison to other treatments. Combined treatment of fertilizers and digging + weeding imposed higher leaf yield in rainfed mulberry cultivation. Fertilizers doses of 95g Urea + 47.5g TSP+ 35g Mp plant/ year in 2 equal split doses followed by 4 times digging* weeding are recommend for higher leaf yield in mulberry tree cultivation under rainfed conditions of Rajshahi District.

Objectives:

To find out an appropriate economical cultural practice of mulberry tree cultivation under rainfed conditions of Rajshahi district of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Two sets of experiments, one with chemical fertilizers and other with cultural practices were conducted at BSRTI, Rajshahi during 1990-93. Mulberry variety BM-1 was selected as tree form with 180 cm x 180 cm spacing planted in 1986. The experiment was laid down in RED with three replications for each treatment and 5 plants in each replication. Treatments: A. Chemical fertilizers:1 g/ plant/ year) C1 = 190 Urea+ 95 TSP + 70 MP in 2 split doses C2= 95 Urea + 47.5 TSP + 35 MP in 2 split doses C3 = 190 Urea + 95 TSP + 70 MP in one application C4= 95 Urea + 47.5 TSP + MP in one application C0 =No fertilizers B. Digging and weeding: D1 =4 times digging and weeding D2 =2 times digging and weeding D0= No digging and weeding Fertilizers were used before and after moonsoon in CL and C2 and only after moonsoon in C3 and C4 at a depth of 15 cm - 20 cm arround each tree. Organic manure was applied at the rate of 5 Kg/ plant/ year in all the treatments except the control (CJ accompanied by normal (4 times/ year) cultural practices. In the 2nd set of experiments (B) no fertilizers were used. The treatment was given in each season in Dh at an interval of one subsequent season in D2. For both the experiments leaf harvest was accompanied by 4 prunings in a year synchonized with the four commercial cocoon crops. Analysis was done separately for each year from the mean value and also for pooled data following proper statistical methods. Economics of leaf production was calculated per plant per year ^.basis separately for each treatment.

Achievement/Findings:

It is apparent from the experiment that only digging and weeding can not influence the leaf yield to an economical level. Rather combined treatment of fertilizers and digging + weeding are essential for higher leaf production in mulberry cultivation, specially in tree form plantation. Therefore, 95g Urea +47.5g TSP +35g MP/ plant/year in 2 split doses followed by 4 times digging and weeding are recommended for higher leaf yield in mulberry tree cultivation under the rainfed conditions of Rajshahi District.
