Studies on the Variation of Bud Characters in Mulberry Germplasm Genotypes (morus Alba).

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Forty five mulberry genotypes maintaining in the germplasm bank of Bangladesh Sericulture Research and Training Institute( BSRTI), Rajshahi were tested to estimate the nature and magnitude of variation of bud characters. Analysis of variances showed that all the characters like one-side accessory bud, two-side accessory bud, bud length, breadth, weight, number of scale leaves/bud, bud length-breadth ratio and sprouting percentage were significantly different among the genotypes indicating the existence of wide scale variability. Phenotypic variances and coefficients of variation for all the characters except bud length-breadth ratio were closer to their corresponding genotypic values and both of the parameters were also higher than their environmental values indicating that the variation of these characters are mainly genotypic. All the characters except bud length-breadth ratio showed high heritability suggesting that these characters are less influenced by the environment and hold the scope of selection for their improvement.

Objectives:

To gather the information on these aspects through proper evaluation of the mulberry varieties maintaining in the germplasm bank and address their merits for future breeding programme.

Methodology:

Forty five mulberry genotypes including both exotic and indigenous in origin maintaining in the germplasm were studied for this experiment. The plants were raised under row to row and plant to plant spacing of 150 cm and 120 cm respectively. Cultural practices were given normally as and when needed. For each genotype, a total of three replications consisting of three plants in each replication were considered. Bud with one side and two side accessory buds were counted from randomly selected 5 branches of each plant under the same replication and their percentages were calculated as follows: Where, TNB = Total number of bud OSAB = One side accessory bud TSAB = Two side accessory bud MS = Meter shoot For length, breadth, weight and scale leaf, 10 buds from each branch were collected in the petridish before 7:00 AM and their length, breadth and weight were measured. Scale leaves/bud were counted by separating the scale leaves from the bud by needle and forceps placing on the slide under stage microscope under magnification of lOx. For sprouting percentage of bud, three earthen ports for each variety were taken and 20 cutting of the same variety were planted in each pot. Data were collected after 20 days of plantation and sprouting percentage was calculated as follows: To test the significance of difference, analysis variance (ANOVA) were worked out by the methods of analysis of variance used for Randomized block design. Coefficient of variation at phenotypic, genotypic and environmental levels was computed following Burton and De Van (1953) and Johnson et al. (1955). Heritability in broad sense was estimated by using the formula as suggested by Warner (1952).

Genotypic variances and coefficients of variation were also higher than the corresponding environmental values in all the characters except in bud length-breadth ratio indicating that the variations are mainly genotypic in nature. Heritability for one side accessory bud (66.21), two side accessory bud (75.10), bud length (89.29), bud breadth (81.75), bud weight (79.13), number of scale leaves/bud (96.69) and sprouting percentage (61. 41) were found high except for bud length breadth ratio (25.97) which showed low heritability. High heritability for all the characters except bud length-breadth ratio indicates that all these characters are heritable in nature and provide the scope of section for their improvement.
