Influence of Cocoon Characteristics on Silk Reeling and Quality Raw Silk Production.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Influence of cocoon characteristics on silk reeling, quality and quantity raw silk production has been studied. Results revealed that reeling performance like raw silk %, recovery %, reelability %, filament length, denier, renditta and quality characteristics viz., size deviation, winding break, tenacity and elongation % were strongly influenced by variation of cocoon sizes in a given lot. Significant seasonal variation was also observed in respect of reeling performance and cocoon characteristics. Therefore, it is suggested that to obtain optimum reeling performances and quality raw silk production cocoon size and shape should be uniform.

Objectives:

To find out the influence of cocoon characteristics on silk reeling performance and quality silk production in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Hybrid cocoons of BI(J) x Ml race were used for the present study. Two types of sample having different cocoon characteristics were considered for the experiment. Sample 1 was selected having lower variations of cocoon characteristics. On the other hand sample 2 was taken higher variations of cocoon characteristics in comparison to sample 1. The experiment was conducted taking three replications for each sample in four different rearing seasons like Chaita, Jaishta, Bhaduri and Agrayhani 2002 designated as S1, S2, S3 and S4 respectively. The samples were then subjected to cocoon assessment and cocoon characteristics determination. The cocoons were then dried in hot air dryer using the following temperature profile (Subhas et al. 1994): Temperature (°C) Time (hr) 100°C 1 hr. 90°C 1 hr. 80°C 1 hr. 70°C 1 hr. 60°C 0.5 hr. The cocoon characteristics like single cocoon weight, single shell weight, raw silk %, recovery %, reelability %, filament length, single filament denier and renditta were determined by reeling 300 number of cocoons from each sample following standard reeling methods (Sonwalker, 1988). The reeling performance of both the samples were carried out on BSRTI fabricated improved cottage reeling machine using three pan cooking system (Shamachary, 1986). The raw silk obtained from the study was tested for different quality parameters as per standard testing methods.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of the above experiments indicate that in a given lot of cocoons the variation of cocoon size and other characteristics influences strongly reeling performance and raw silk quality. From this, it could be concluded that cocoon lots containing higher cocoon weight and shell weight, more unbroken filament length, lower defective cocoon percentage, uniform cocoon size enhances better reeling performances and, quality and quantity silk production.
