Breeding of High Yielding Multivoltine Breeds of Mulberry Silkworm, Bombyx Mori L. 1. Breeding of BSRI-92 Series.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Through a breeding experiment four promising lines, named as NMB-B b3(y), NMB-C c3 (y), NMB-Dds (y) and NMB-G g3 (w) were developed. All the evolved breeds were superior to the control Nistari and exhibited highly significant values in all the economic traits under consideration. An increase of 43.74-45.65% in fecundity, 0.21-2.46 in hatching, 75.96-85.7% in larval weight, 35.02-40.63% in effective rate of rearing by weight, 34.31-38.23% in cocoon weight. 84.61-92.23% in shell weight, 99.99-104.53% filament length. 16.87-19.28% in reelability and 103.4-116.5% in cocoon yield over the control. The developed breeds may be commercially exploited as a substitute of Nistari as well as earlier developed breeds which grown old in the field.

Objectives:

The present breeding has been undertaken to evolve improved multivoltine breeds superior to traditional Nistari in high yield.

Methodology:

Multivoltine viz., Nistari (M), Mistier white and five bivoltine breeds namely NB7, NB1B, NB4D2, KA and BV-J were included for this present breeding experiment. All the included bivoltine breeds except BV-J were previously collected from India and at present including other three breeds all are being maintained in the germplasm bank of BSRTI, Rajshahi. Normally indigenous races are very poor in respect of cocoon yield but it can nicely resist any adverse climates. Similarly all the bivoltines have proved to be popular in respect of high yield but the worms by nature are very sensitive to adverse weather. In this breeding, both bivoltine and multivoltine were used for crossing as male and female components and initially ten combinations (Plans] were raised in 5 cellular beds followed by mass in F1 to obtain maximum combination effect and continued upto F4 generation. Again from F5 generation onwards five sublines from the plans NMB-A,D,E,F,G, four sublines from the plans NMB-B,H,I,J and three from NMB-C were isolated based on cocoon colour, shape, size and other quantitative traits. The isolated sublines were maintained in cellular beds during successive generation. All the sublines were subjected to further selection from F6 and extended up to F17 generation. The rearing was conducted in a randomised block design and new technology of silkworm rearing (Krishnaswami 1978) was followed throughout the experiment. Observations were made on fecundity, hatching, larval weight, ERR by no and weight, single cocoon weight, shell weight, filament length, renditta reelability and yield/100 dfls. Data of the last three (15-17) generations were subjected to statistical analysis (ANOVA).

Achievement/Findings:

The results clearly indicated that the superiority of the new breeds over Nistari in all the economic parameters. Hence, the same breeds may be commercially exploited as substitute of Nistari as well as earlier developed breeds which grown old in the field to boost silk production in Bangladesh.
