Studies on the Heterosis for Six Economic Traits in Multivoltine Silkworm, Bombyx Mori L.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four multivoltine silkworm races having adequate phenorypic diversity for different economic traits were crossed in all possible combinations including reciprocals to estimate heterosis for six economic characters of silkworm Bombyx mori L. Experimental results indicated that the magnitude of heterosis was found to vary in different rearing seasons. BSR-10 x M2P2 was found to be the best combination for favourable rearing season and the combination Nistari x M2 P2 is recommended for commercial rearing during unfavourable rearing seasons of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To produce such hybrids to estimate the degree of heterosis for different economic traits and to recommend better hybrids for cocoon production in the field.

Methodology:

Four multivoltine races viz., Nistari(M), 05, M2 P2 and BSR-10(M) were crossed in 12 possible combinations including reciprocals. For each crosses only 4 dfls were selected for rearing following standard methods each with three replications. The experiment was conducted both in one favourable (Feb-March) and one unfavourable silkworm rearing (July-August) seasons of Bangladesh. Observations on fecundity (FD), effective rate of rearing (ERR%), cocoon weight (CW), shell weight (SW), renditta (RD) and yield/100 dfls (YL/100 dfls) were carefully recorded. Average performance of parent and hybrids over different replications were used for calculating the magnitude of heterosis. Analysis were done following methods of Serra (1966).Heterosis was estimated in terms of two parameters, heterosis over mid-parent (MP) and heterosis over better parent (BP).

Achievement/Findings:

Only BSR-10 x M2P2 was found to be the best cross for different economic traits with significant positive heterosis suitable for favorable rearing season.Similarly the combination Nistari (M) x M2P2 was proved to be much suitable for unfavorable rearing season of Bangladesh with significant positive hetero sis over most of the mid parents.
