Screening for Submergence Tolerance of Some Local T. Aman Varieties.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at BRRI, Gazipur with the objective to find out the sub submergence tolerance of local T. Aman varieties. Out of 15 tested varieties, Kala Dhan was the best performer having tolerance score 3 and recovery score 1. Hizal Deegha, Sada Gabura, Khai Matar, Kumra Gour and Ashfal were found to be tolerance with tolerance score 5 or ≤ 3 and recovery score 1.

Objectives:

To find out the sub submergence tolerance of local T. Aman varieties.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at BRRI, Gazipur. Sprouted seeds of 15 local T. Aman varieties were sown in line in steel trays containing puddle soil. The soil was fertilized with Urea-MP-Gypsum @ 5-2-2-2 g/ tray. In each line 20 seedlings were kept. FR 13A and BR5 were used as tolerant and susceptible check respectively. 20 days old seedlings were submerged in 70 cm deep turbid water for 10 days. The water temperature of the tank was 30⁰C at noon 25⁰C at the morning. After drainage of water the plants were allowed to recover. At 15 days after drainage of water all the submerged plants were received 3 gm of Urea. The following observations were recorded such as submergence tolerance score, % survival and recovery score after 5, 15, 21 days of drainage of water respectively, % elongation of plant height at the end of submergence, dry matter content of seedling at 39 days recovery after drainage of water and before submergence.

Achievement/Findings:

The percent survival of the tested varieties varied due to submergence. The tolerant variety FR 13A survived 100 percent and showed the highest level (1) of tolerance and recovery. The survival percentage of susceptible check BR5 was only 0 to 10 with lowest (9) tolerance and recovery. Out of 15 tested varieties, eight varieties had more than 80% survival. Kala dhan had the highest survival percentage followed by Sada Gabura which were 97 and 90% respectively and they exhibited the highest tolerance level (3). Hizal Deegha, Khai Matar, Kumra Gour and Ashfol showed moderate tolerance (5) to submergence. The dry wt. of seedling measured before submergence varied from 1.02 to 3.48. Kala dhan had the highest seedling weight (3.48 g/seedling) and the susceptible check BR5 had the lowest seedling weight (1.02 g/seedling). Wide variation observed in percent elongation after drainage of water. The highest percent elongation (126.9%) was found in Hizal Deegha followed by Ajal Deegha (120.9%). The tolerance variety FR13A showed only 4.6% increase in plant height. Among the tested varieties eight varieties recovered better with recovery score 3 or less than 3. Out of these, Kala Dhan performed similar to FR13A having recovery score 1. After recovery the highest tiller number and dry wt. were produced by Kala dhan.
