Development of High Yielding Multivoltine Breeds of Silkworm, Bombyxmori L. Suitable for Unfavourable Seasons of Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four superior multlvoltine breeds were developed through conventional breeding techniques. The characteristics of the new breeds are compared with Nistari-M (a traditional race of Bangladesh) as control. All the new breeds are superior to the control in all economic characters viz., fecundity, larval weight, effective rate of rearing, cocoon weight, shell weight, length of filament, renditta and yield/l00dfls. Field trial results has also revealed the superiority of the new breeds over Nistari.

Objectives:

To secure high yielding tolerant breeds suited to their environment.

Methodology:

Eight silkworm races which are treated relatively adaptable to adverse climatic condition among the germplasm stocks of BSRTI namely, Nistari - (M), BSRTI-83/2, 85/3, BSR-3, Nistari-(L), Nistari-(O) and Urboshi-2 and a race 'G' (which is improved multivoltine as well as good combiner for hybrid seed preparation specially for adverse weather was collected from India) were used for this experiment. Initially these races (except race 'G') were utilized for crossing under six race breeding plans taking all the multivoltine as female and Nistari as male component and the combinations are maintained up to F4 generation. The F4 females of each line were crossed again with race 'G1 with an objective to increase genetic variability. The combinations were reared in mass beds to secure maximum recombination effect. In F5 onwards some promising sublines were isolated based on shape, size arid colour of the cocoons as well as high survival and uniform growth. During quantitative assessment in respect of individual cocoon weight and shell weight was found to be above the average that very sublines were subjected to half sib mating to maintain the succeeding generation (Petkov 1978 and Jayaswal et al 1992). In F8 generation some sublines showed much promising performance. Finally, in the F1% generation 4 promising sublines were isolated based on the most effective economic parameters. The isolated breeds referred to as HTHRB-5a(Bj), 6(B2), 8(B3), and 9b(B4) were reared from F12 to F15 along with Nistari and Individual assessment followed by selection were systematically done in each generation. Mass rearing of the new breeds were conducted both in laboratory and field with a control line, Nistari to assess their superiority and feasibility during the months from April-August / 92-93.

The evolved breeds are much superior to Nistari and maybe recommended for commercial exploitation in the unfavourable rearing seasons of Bangladesh.
