Breeding of Hardy and Highly Productive Multivoltine Breeds of Silkworm, Bombyx Mori L.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A multivoltine breeding experiment was conducted at Bangladeshi Sericulture Research and Training Institute( BSRTI), Rajshahi with an objective for evolve hardy highly productive multivoltine breeds of silkworm. Five multivoltine and bivoltine races were utilized for crossing. Three multivoltine breeds were isolated and fixed in the F12 generation. The characteristics of the evolved breeds were compared where an increase of 41.81-44.24% in fecundity. 84.87-92.86% in larval weight, 37.94-48.12% in cocoon yield, 36.0-41.0% in cocoon weight. 130.0-150.0% in shell weight. 133.82-130.53% in length of filament and 124.26-130.76% iu yield/100 tills over the control was observed. To evolved breeds may be commercially exploited in the Held lo boost up silk production in Bangladesh. evolving hardy with highly productive mullivolline breed which could replace the earlier breeds for its low.

Objectives:

To evolving hardy with highly productive multivoltine breed which could replace the earlier breeds for its low economic characters.

Methodology:

The present investigation was initiated during the year 1992 involving two bivoltines, BV-J and BV-SK and three indigenous races viz., Nislari (IJ), Nistari (L) and Nistari (P) which were maintained in the germplasm bank of Bangladesh Sericulture Research and Training Institute, Rajshahi. These races were utilized for crossing under three race breeding plans taking multivoltine as the female component and bivoltine as the male. The F, females of each plan was again back crossed with the same bivoltine and the lines were named as SWRB-1,2 and 3. The combination was raised in mass and the same was carried out upto F4 generation. Once again the F4 females were outcrossed with the males of another bivoltine in order to increase the range of genetic variability. Here mass rearing was conducted till another four succeeding generation to obtain maximum recombination effect. From F5 onwards cellular rearings were conducted with 5 replications each. Based on cocoon colour, shape and sizes as well as other economic characters, three sublines from the line SWRB-1, two from SWRB-2 and four from SWRB-3 were isolated. All the sublines were maintained in a cellular bed and subjected to further selection pressure from F6 to F12 which was extended up to FI7 generation. Sufficient number of disease free laying having good number of eggs and high hatching percentage were finally brushed. The rearing was conducted throughout the year and standard rearing techniques recommended by Krlshnaswaml (1978) were followed. The selection pressure was stressed on fecundity, hatching %, weight of 10 mature larvae, effective rate of rearing, single cocoon weight, single shell weight, S.R % length of filament and yield/ 100 dfls.

Achievement/Findings:

The overall results of this present multivoltlne breeding indicated that the yield performance of the developed breeds exhibited much higher productivity over the control. No doubt, the evolved breeds will play a significant role In improving cocoon yield. Hence, from the above findings it may be concluded that the evolved breeds could be effectively used for commercial exploitation In Bangladesh.
