Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The approximate digestibility (AD), efficiency of conversion of ingested (ECI1 arid digested mulberry leaves (ECD) t.o silkworm body substance Find cocoon shell were found to be highest on feeding mulberry variety BM-3 followed by BM-4 and BM-1. Silkworm larvae fed on bush leaves showed the highest values for AD, ECI and ECD to silkwnn body substance, while the tree leaves showed the least values. Larvae fed on the leaves of tree mulberry showed the highest value for ECD to cocoon shell whereas the least value was observed on feeding the bush leaves.

Objectives:

To findout the nutritional efficiency of different mulberry (morus spp.) Varieties raised under different cultivation forms in silkworm, Bombyx mori L.

Methodology:

Four developed mulberry varieties namely: BM-1, BM-2, BM-3 and BM-4 and one indigenous mulberry variety Telia were used for the study. The consumption and utilization of leaves of these varieties raised under three forms of cultivation (bush, lowcut and tree) by the silkworm race BSRI-85/3 (improved multlvol-tine) were studied during four different silkworm rearing seasons such as Si (February-March), 82 (May-June), S3 (August-September) and 84 (November-December). The temperature and rel¬ative humidity of the rearing house were main¬tained as per requirement in different seasons. One disease free laying (Dfl) of silkworm eggs were brushed for each treatment. After third moult each treatment was divided into four replications. Twenty worms were selected and reared for each replication. After 4th moult that is from the 1st day of the 5th instar larvae of each replication were provided with weighed amount of mulberry leaves. Every day the left over leaves alongwith the faeces were collected and dried in an oven at 70"c and separated. The dry weight of the left over mulberry leaves and faeces were recorded separately. The dry matter content of mulberry leaves fed to worms were estimated from the dummy of the same quantity of leaves dried separately In an oven during each time of feeding. The worms were inspected dally and the sick larvae present were excluded and replaced from the reserve larvae which had beed treated exactly in the same manner. On the first and last day (before ripening) of the 5th instar twenty larvae (4th replication) were kept on fasting each time, weighed and then dried in an oven at 70°C until constant weight was obtained. The gain In weight was recorded. The rearing was conducted according to the improved rearing techniques of Krishnaswaml (1978) The approximate digestibility and efficiency of conversion of ingested and digested food into body matter and cocoon shell were determined (Waldbauer 1968).

Achievement/Findings:

The significant positive correlations between the ingesta and larval weight, larval weight and shell weight and, ingesta and shell weight (Table 4) in the present studies established a direct relationship between the amount of leaves intake and the growth of Bombyx mori larvae as well as the productivity of silk cocoon shell. The ECI and ECD for cocoon shell (Table 3) were found to be higher on feeding mulberry leaves of BM-3, BM-1 and BM-4 varieties. Again the tree leaves showed higher values of EC! and ECD for cocoon shell to lowcut and bush mulberry. The better efficiency for unit cocoon shell weight on feeding tree leaves might be due to higher dry matter, crude protein and carbohydrate content in these leaves. This clearly indicates that the mulberry varieties BM-3, BM-1 and BM-4 have better efficiency for production of unit cocoon shell weight.
