The study was conducted at BRRI, Gazipur. Three varieties namely FR13A, BR11 and BRRI dhan32 and advance breeding line BR6110-10-2-1 were used in this study. The result indicates that  the percent survival of submerged seedling in four rice varieties varied due to different age of seedling. Survival percentage increased with the increase of seedling age. Among the varieties FR13A had the survival percentage followed by BRRI dhan32.  Irrespective of variety, Submergence tolerance increased significant with the increase of seedling age as indicted by lower Submergence tolerance score. The dry accumulation pattern was found to be quite variable among the varieties of rice. Up to 15-day of seedling age the seedling dry matter did not differ clearly. Plants ability to elongate  indicated that FR13A elongation was maximum in 20 days old seedling that afterwards decreased gradually. The highest elongation in other varieties was recorded in 25 days old seedling and followed a declining trend in subsequent stages.  More or less similar plant height (81.2 to 86.8) was observed in all the seedling age in FR13A. But in other varieties, the parameter was significantly reduced by the seedling age. Plant height varied from 46.6 cm to 61.5 cm in BR6110-10-2-1, 42.4 cm to 60 cm in BR11 and 56.3 cm to 69.7 cm in BRRI dhan32. Higher increase in plant height indicating undesirable response against submergence. Recovery score was made based on the attributes like tiller number dry matter accumulation and plant height. FR13A and BRRI dhan32 had the lowest recovery score (1) indicating better recovery at all seedling age. But BR6110-10-2-1 recovered better at 45 days of seedling age and BR11 at 25, 40 & 45 days of seedling age.

To find out the contribution of reserved carbohydrate on the recovery of submerged seedling during post- submergence period.

The study was conducted at BRRI, Gazipur. Three varieties namely FR13A, BR11 and BRRI dhan32 and advance breeding line BR6110-10-2-1 were used in this study. Uniformly sprouted of these entries were sown in lines in steel trays containing soil fertilized with Urea-TSP-MP-Gypsum @ 5-2-2-2 g/tray. Thinning was done after 7 days of seeding for keeping desired density of plants having same leaf stage. Each tray contained 8 rows of plants accommodating two rows each entries. Each row contained 10 plants and distance between the rows was 5 cm. To get aged seedling the seeds were sown in eight days at 5 days interval.10, 15, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 days old seedling were submerged completely in a cemented water tank (submergence tank) to depth of 100 cm above the soil level. The water was made turbid twice daily by mixing mud. The soil particle of the water was 1.53 g/L this was done to ensure that the conditions were made as similar as possible to the conditions which occur during actual flooding in nature. After 10 days of submergence the trays were transferred to the green house and the plants were allowed to recover for 30 days. At 15 days after the drainage of water 2 g of Urea was applied in each tray. The elongation ability was recorded at the end of submergence. Percent survival was measured after days of drainage of water. Submergence tolerance score was recorded after 5 days of drainage of water. Recovery score was recorded in terms of growth vigor and tiller number per hill at 30 days after termination of submergence treatment. Carbohydrate content in the plants was analyzed at both before and after submergence.

Genotypic variation in submergence tolerance in rice is contributed by the seedling age and starch depletion rate. The smaller rate of starch depletion during submergence as well as maintenance of higher level of starch appeared to contribute to better survivability and recovery in FR13A.
