Multiplication and Conservation of Foundation Flock of Rupali (blri-1) and (blri-2) Nagaswari Ducks.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Abstract: In native duck breeding program of study 1, a total of 600 desi white (DW) and desi black (DB) ducks were collected from rural areas and process of selection was carried out on phenotypic characters. In the first generation about 6% duckling showed dissimilar plumage color and were discarded from the flock. Their average annual egg production and peak egg production was respectively 41 and 64.5 (%) and egg weight was 59 g. In the study 2, a total of 1466 of Rupali (desi white) and Nagaswari (desi black) ducks were studied for production and reproduction and found that fertility of Rupali duck was higher (87.61%) than other duck genotypes. On the other hand hatchability was better (89%) in Rupali duck. Live weight at 24th weeks of age and age at first laying differed significantly between existing and collected flock. Body weight at 24th weeks of age was higher in Rupali than other duck genotypes. Rupali duck started to lay at 130 days of age which is ten days earlier than Nagaswari duck. There found no significant difference between two flocks in day old body weight, feed intake, egg weight and mortality in study 1 and 2.

Objectives:

Study the conservation and multiplication process of foundation flock of Rupali (BLRI-1) and (BLRI-2) Nagaswari ducks and its impact at farmer level.

Methodology:

In study 1, a total of 600 white and black ducks have been collected and quarantined to observe for health condition. After quarantine of 10 days the birds were housed for intensive management. Ducks received a diet containing 2700 Kcal/ kg ME and 160g/kg crude protein. Lighting was provided 16 hrs per day during laying period. Out of collected ducks a total of 400 duckling (F1) have were produced. The ducks were brooded on slated floor with necessary brooding arrangement up to 24th weeks of age and then reared on floor, in an open sided house, having rearing pens with family mating system. 4-5 sq ft floor space provided for each duck including range. They had free access to water for beak dipping and bathing. In study 2, existing native duck flock of Rupali and Nagaswari were maintained and compared the performance of collected flock.

Achievement/Findings:

The flock of Rupali (desi white) and Nagaswari (desi black) duck is still not large enough to conduct effective breeding programme. Number of ducks and other facilities are to be increasing near future to fruitful the outcome.
