Field Trial of BLRI Developed Hybrid Layer.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Straight run day old chicks were distributed to 2 farmers of Dinajpur sadar and Madhupur upazila to find their comparative production performance. Live weights, age at onset of lay (weeks), age at peak egg production (days), average egg production rate up to 38 weeks of age and mortality rate during laying period at Dinajpur sadar and Madhupur respectively were 1755.26g and 1500g, 20 and 21, 203 and 175,93.71% and 89.34%, 2.03% and 4.03%.

Objectives:

1. To study the impact of hybrid layer (performance of egg laying by known line stock of BLRI) at field level.

2. To evaluate the potentiality of BLRI developed hybrid layer under farmers condition in different location.

Methodology:

A total of straight run day old chicks were distributed in 2 locations; Madhupur 700 and Dinajpur 1000. Chicks were hatched in the hatchery of BLRI. Hatching eggs were collected from the eggs of male and female line produced from pure lines, reared under breeding program of BLRI. Before distribution, the chicks were vaccinated against the Marex diseases. Cooperators farmers raised the chicken in open sided slatted house. They fed the layers adlibitum on layer mash feed procured from the local market. A scientific assistant helped the farmers in recording data on weekly body weight, daily feed intake, egg production and mortality. Optimum light was provided to support their egg production, though there was frequent disruption due to electricity failure. Data as recorded on production performance in two locations were compared.

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed that farmers of Madhupur location failed to provide optimum nutrition during the start of lay which consequently affected egg production rate; otherwise farmers can rear BLRI-1 layers with similar benefit as they obtained from other commercial layers.
