Dormancy and Viability of BRRI Recommended Rice Varieties Grown in Boro, Aus and Aman Seasons.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at BRRI, Gazipur and the objective was to determine the dormant and viable period of some rice varieties in Boro, Aus and Aman seasons. Result indicates that Dormancy: In Boro season, the seeds of all the varieties had low dormancy than that of Aus and Aman season. In Boro season, the seeds of BR3, BR8, BR12, BR20, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan35, BRRI dhan36 had low dormancy than other varieties. The range of dormant period varied from 12 to 27 days in season. In Aman season BRRI dhan37 showed the lowest. In Aus season BRRI dhan28 showed the longest dormant period. Viability: Seed viability period had been designated as the duration within which the percentage of germination is 80% of higher. In Boro season, seed of viability duration was 130 days for BR1, BR2, BR24 and BRRI dhan27. The seeds of BR15 were viable up to 220 days after maturity and BR3 was viable up to 210 days. In this season BR dhan28 remained viable only for 105 days. In Aus season, most of the varieties were viable up to 290 to 340 days after maturity. In season BR3 was viable for longer period compared to other varieties. In Aman season most of the varieties was viable up to 260 to 330 days after harvest. The seeds of all the varieties exhibited long viability duration when grown in Aus and Aman season than that of Boro season. Most of the varieties exhibited more than 90% germination for 230-300 days maturity when grown in Aman season. In contrast, all the varieties had germination percentage 90 or higher up to 105 to 220 days after maturity when grown in Boro season. Seed storage environment was also a factor for determining seed viability. Average storage temperature and relative humidity was high in Boro crop than that of other two crops. High temperature and high humidity was the reason for short viability period of Boro crops.

Objectives:

To determine the dormant and viable period of some rice varieties in Boro, Aus and Aman seasons.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at BRRI, Gazipur. Twenty three varieties in Boro season, thirteen varieties in Aus season and seventeen varieties in Aman season were grown in the field up to maturity using the normal cultural practices in the year 2004. Seeds were collected, sum dried at 12-12.5% moisture content. The collected seeds were preserved. These seeds were used for dormancy and viability test. Dormancy test: Germination test was done at the date of harvest and then at an interval of 7 days until the dormancy was broken down. Viability test: When germination percent was 80% or above the seed were preserved in polyethylene bag at room temperature. These seeds were used for viability test. The viability test was down at an interval of 30 days beginning from the date of broken the dormancy. Design: CRD and Replication: 3.

Achievement/Findings:

I) The seeds of Aman season crop had dormancy than that of Aus and Boro season II) The seeds of all the varieties exhibited long viability duration when grown in Aman and Aus seasons than that of Boro season. III) BR3 showed a long seed viability period than that of other varieties. IV) In Aman season BR22, BR25, BRRI dhan34 and BRRI dhan39 had long viability period.
