Productive and Reproductive Performances of Brown Bengal Goat in Hilly Area at Naikhongchari.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The Brown Bengal goats are available at hilly districts of Bangladesh. They are reputed to be very hardy and capable of thriving in any adverse environmental condition. Their body size is similar as Black Bengal goat. The objective of the research programme is to determine the productive and reproductive performances of Brown Bengal Goat in hilly area at Naikhongchari. Animals were maintained in a semi-intensive rearing system. All goats were housed in a kacha floor house, were allowed to graze for 6-7 hours per day and concentrate was offered twice daily during morning and evening at the rate of 200-250 gm per head per day. The reproductive traits of generation 1 in Age at first heat (AFH), Age at first kidding (AFK) and Kidding to first heat (KFH) were slightly better than the foundation herds. The average highest growth rate of Brown Bengal goat was found in 0-3 months of age. The birth weight of male kid was significantly higher than female kid. Birth weight of single kid stood first followed by twin and triplet kid.

Objectives:

The objective of the research programme is to determine the productive and reproductive performances of Brown Bengal Goat in hilly area at Naikhongchari.

Methodology:

Animals were maintained in a semi-intensive rearing system. All goats were housed in a kacha floor house, were allowed to graze for 6-7 hours per day and concentrate was offered twice daily during morning and evening at the rate of 200-250 gm per head per day. Data on productive, reproductive and incidence of diseases were recorded regularly. Parameters studied were: Age at first heat (AFH), Gestation length (GL), Age at first kidding (AFK), Kidding to first heat (KFH) Kidding to conception (KC), Kidding interval (KI), Litter size (LS) and Birth weight of kid BW). The statistical analysis of the data was perform using compare with one way ANOVA and univariate analysis of variance procedure of SPSS package. The difference between treatments means were examined by using Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

The reproductive traits of generation 1 in AFH, AFK and KFH were slightly better than the foundation herds. According to parity, reproductive traits of the gestation length, kidding to first heat, kidding to conception and kidding interval were increasing trends with increasing parity up to 3rd lactation. The average highest growth rate of Brown Bengal goat was found in 0-3 months of age. The birth weight of male kid was significantly higher than female kid. Birth weight of single kid stood first followed by twin and triplet.
