The effects of different sowing method, seed rate and growth regulator treatment on germination and biomass production of Eryngium foetidum was studied at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University during December 2007 to July 2008 to standardize the seed rate, sowing density with growth regulator treatment. All the factors influenced seed germination, flowering and biomass production. Broadcasting or line sowing in closer spacing (10 cm) with hormone treatment (500 ppm GA3 + 50 ppm kinetin) increased germination, number of harvested plants, fresh weight and biomass. The highest number of seedlings (1891/m2), harvested plant (1212/m2) and fresh plant weight (55.73 t/ha) were obtained from broadcasting sowing of growth regulator treated 30 kg seeds/ha. The maximum biomass (6.38 t/ha) was produced when 30 kg/ha growth regulator treated seeds were sown in line sowing 10 cm apart.

Variety and Species
i) find out the effect of seed rates and sowing method with growth regulator application for better germination and usable leaf and biomass production, and ii) to standardize the seed rate and sowing method with or without growth regulator treatment.
The experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Field Laboratory of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Salna, Gazipur during December 2007 to July 2008. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with three factors and replicated thrice. Two hormone treatments (H1: GA3 (500ppm) + Kinetin (50ppm) and H0: Distilled water) are assigned in main plots, three sowing methods (D1: Broadcasting, D2: Line sowing 10cm apart, D3: Line sowing 15 cm apart) in the sub plots and three seed rates (S1: 10 kg/ha , S2: 20 kg/ha and S3: 30 kg/ha) were placed in sub-sub plots or unit plots. The experimental land was fertilized with decomposed cowdung @ 15 t/ha, 200 kg-N, 120 kg-P and 150 kg K. Seeds @ 3, 6 and 9 g per plot were sown for 10 kg/ha (S1), 20 kg/ha (S2), and 30 kg/ha (S3) seed rates, respectively, in the bed and mixed with upper surface (0.1 - 0.5 cm) of the soil for broadcasting system. For line sowing, same rates of seeds are sown continuously in furrows and covered with thin layer (0.1 to 0.3 cm) of soil. Bamboo with black mosquito net (2mm loop) covered light shade was made to discard about 50% sunlight to ensure lengthy and succulent leaves (Moniruzzaman, 2002). Weeding, irrigation and other cultural practices have been done as and when necessary. Arising flower stalks were count and broken so that more leaves can be produced. Harvesting was done from the last week of May to the second week of July with an interval of 20 days when the leaves became most succulent. Data on days to germination, number of seedlings, plant height, leaves per plant, leaf size, plant weight, harvested plants/m2, were taken from 10 plants from each harvest in every plot.

20 kg seed/ha with GR (GA3 500ppm and kinetin 50ppm) treatment plus broadcasting or line sowing 10cm apart were found better for higher yield as well as profitability in Eryngium foetidum cultivation.
