Potentials of Rice Husk Fired Power Generation in Bangladesh: a Case Study

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The energy demand is increasing day by day in Bangladesh. Uses of renewable energy sources are now the crucial concern to meet the energy crisis. Annually, 0.1 million tons of paddy was processed as parboiled and un-parboiled condition by 38 rice mills. About 63.15% rice mills processed both parboiled and un-parboiled rice whereas 36.84% rice mills processed parboiled rice only. On an average, monthly paddy processing capacity of the studied mills was 8333 tons and about 9 tons of paddy was processed per batch in these rice mills. Annually, 20158 tons of husk was produced from 38 rice mill. Monthly rice husk production was more than 1500 tons. A total of 75% (15018 t) husks were utilized in parboiling and drying purposes. Monthly surplus husk in the study area was about 423.5 tons. Monthly electricity consumption in these mills was ranged from 1820 kWh to 21840 kWh. It was estimated that surplus husk could be used to generate electricity of 384 and 549 kW by gasification and steam turbine method, respectively. The surplus husk could be doubled if improved steaming system was used and power generation in gasification and steam turbine would be 768 kW and 1098 kW respectively.

Objectives:

1.To estimate the husk production and consumption in the selected study area

2.To appraise or assess the power requirement and consumption pattern in the rice milling industries of the study area

3.To explore the feasibility to set up rice husk fired power generation plant

Methodology:

The sample survey was conducted in the selected site of Kaliakoir upazilla under Gazipur district during the period of 2009. Structured questionnaire was prepared and pre-tested to collect data from the rice mills. Data were collected from 38 rice mills involving general information of the rice mills, amount of paddy processed per year, number of batch processed per year as parboiled and un-parboiled condition, annual husk production, consumption and surpluses pattern of husk. Electricity load of the rice mill industries were calculated to find out the energy demand, supply and load shedding situation. Existing uses of rice husk, possible options for saving of rice husk, potential power generation from rice husk as intervention of traditional and improved rice parboiling systems, revenue from husk fired power generation and major constrained were also considered to study the feasibility of rice husk fired power generation.

Achievement/Findings:

Rice husk was found as a potential source of energy in the study area. It was possible to establish rice husk fired power generation in Kaliakoir upazilla by using existing surplus husk to produce 384 and 549 kW electricity by gasification and steam turbine methods respectively. The electricity generation could be doubled if improved boiler was used. Therefore, it was suggested to replace the entire traditional rice parboiling unit to modern one in order to save rice husk for generating electricity and thus meet the existing power crisis for smooth operation of the mills.
