Repair and Maintenance Cost Model for Small Engines Used in Agriculture

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The mathematical models were developed for repair and maintenance time with age and repair rate, repair and maintenance cost with repair rate, repair and maintenance cost with age of the engine. There was always highly positive correlation between repair rate of the engines and R & M time. As the repair rate of the engines was increased, the R & M time (hr) was also increased. Repair cost was increased with the accumulated use (age) of the engines. The repair rate was increased with the age of the engine. Power equation was developed by the repair and maintenance cost with accumulative use in hours. The model curve showed that the accumulate use in hours of the engine was the major determinant of the engines’ repair and maintenance cost. The prediction models for R & M cost for the power tiller engine, trolley engine, irrigation engine, static huller engine were established from this equation. The model also predicted a nearly constant rate of increase in the accumulated repair cost toward the end of the engine life. This model represents more real situation and could provide reliable estimates of the R & M cost.

Objectives:

To develop mathematical model on repair and maintenance cost, repair rate in order to forecast the cost of repair and replacement of parts to take early measure.

Methodology:

Data were collected from forty four small engines used in power tiller, trolley, irrigation pumps and hullers. Person to person contact survey (Delphi) method was followed for data collection. The information about purchase price, age of the engine, total number of repairing/replacement of the parts and their cost, number of repairs, availability of spare parts were collected by interviewing owners and?operators. Mathematical relationships were developed among repair and maintenance cost, age and repair rate of the engine. Mathematical models have been developed to predict the engine failure of various elements in order to determine the R&M cost. Power equations were developed between repair and maintenance cost with use as per recommendation made by Rotz (1985).

Achievement/Findings:

Repair cost was increased with the accumulated use (age) of the engines. The R & M cost for trolley engines was the highest (5.05 Tk/hr) and the lowest (3.75 Tk/hr) was for static huller engine in the last period of study. The R & M cost for power tiller engine and irrigation engine was laid in between, the former having the higher than that of the irrigation engine. R & M cost gradually increased with the age of engine for all the cases. As the repair rate was increased, the R & M cost of the engine was increased for different usage. The repair rate was increased with the age of the engine. For the trolley engines, the repair rate (13.23) was the highest followed by the power tiller engines and the lowest repair rate (6.45) was for the static huller engines. There was always high positive correlation between repair rate of the engines and R & M time. As the repair rate of the engines was increased, the R & M time (hr) was also increased. The correlation between R & M cost as percent of initial purchase price of engine and cumulative use in hours, would be best described by a power function equation of Y = aXb. The prediction models for R & M cost for the power tiller engine, trolley engine, irrigation engine, static huller engine were established from this equation. The model also predicted a nearly constant rate of increase in the accumulated repair cost toward the end of the engine life. This model represents more real situation and can provide reliable estimates of the R & M cost.
