Survey on the Mechanization Status in Digram Agricultural Block Godagari, Rajshahi

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Baseline survey on farm mechanization was conducted in the project location. Land preparation was fully mechanized in the project location. Nearly, 38 power tillers are available in this block for land preparation and carrying goods. Transplanting was done manually. Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) installed 56 DTW to provide irrigation facility to the farmers. About 45 LLP (Low lift pump) were in operation to irrigate the crop land. Hand weeding was widely practiced in this region. About 25.74% farmers used sprayer. Manual harvesting of paddy, wheat and other crops using a sickle was the only prevailing practice in the study area. Mechanical harvester was not introduced in this area. About, 85 pedal threshers were currently in operation to thresh rice crop in different seasons. Grains were cleaned by using traditional cleaning device named kula. After harvesting, unthreshed grains were carried out on headload and cart from land to their home yard. Presently, trolley was widely used for carrying both farm and non-farm products during the whole year in rural areas. The major cropping patterns were identified as Fallow-Fallow-Aman, Boro-Fallow-Aman, Boro-Aus-Aman and Mustard-Fallow-Aman. The average cropping intensity was 193.67%.

Objectives:

1.To review the demographic characteristics of the household heads;

2.To measure the cost of production of paddy and wheat;

3.To identify the cropping pattern and cropping intensity;

4.To investigate the mechanization status; and

5.To identify the scope of mechanized cultivation.

Methodology:

Baseline survey on farm mechanization was conducted in the Digram agricultural block. A complete household census of the block was carried out and the households were stratified into five different categories namely, large (farm size >3.012 ha), medium (farm size 1.004-3.012 ha), small (farm size 0.201-1.004 ha), marginal (farm size 0.067-0.201 ha) and landless (farm size < 0.0067 ha). From the list of the households thus obtained, the proportionate number i.e. 50% households from each category were selected randomly which constituted the sample size of the survey. FGD (Focus Group Discussion) and other PRA tools were also used to collect additional information. Collected data were put in a master sheet. These were then analyzed using the computer for necessary table. Classified tables were prepared depending on the objectives of the study.

Achievement/Findings:

Male and female worked in all agricultural activities. Large farmers were more dependent on hired labour rather than family labour. The extent of hired labour utilization was directly related with the farming system. Wage rate of female worker was less than the male worker, although male and female worker performed same activity. Irrespective of farm category, average cost of production of Aman, Borro, Aus and wheat was Tk 15,652, Tk 22,049, Tk. 13,261 and Tk 11,071 per ha. Land preparation was fully mechanized in the project location. Transplanting is done manually.
