Field Demonstration of BRRI Reaper and Thresher in Rajshahi District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Most of the farmers use pedal thresher on rental basis and the rental charge is 0.5 kg for every 40 kg. Motorized or engine power operated open drum thresher with scale up version of the conventional pedal thresher has not yet been introduced here. Harvesting, threshing, cleaning, drying and bagging operations are done on contact basis in the study area. Labourers offer wage rate of 3 kg per 20 kg of production to do these activities. During aman season of 2006 and wheat season of 2007, 10 demonstrations were conducted at ten places in Diagram block under Godagari Upazila in Rajshahi district. About 500 participants attended in the demonstration programme. BRRI machines were operated before the participants at least half an hour. All the participants expressed their satisfaction about the performance of the machines and emphasized the need of these machines in farming activity. The price of the machine seemed to be beyond their purchasing capacity. Individual farmers may not be able to buy the machines due to capital constraints. During demonstration, much enthusiasm was observed among the participating farmers about the BRRI machines. Participants were optimistic for the widespread adoption of the machines demonstrated.

Objectives:

To create awareness among the farmers to use BRRI farm machines

Methodology:

At each demonstration about 50 participants mostly farmers (resource poor, marginal and small), DAE officials, manufacturers and NGO workers were invited. Introductory session was arranged to familiarize the machine performance, unit price, and profitability over traditional practices, operation, repair and maintenance of the machine. Machine was operated before the participants at least for half an hour. Discussion sessions were arranged to collect participants' reaction on the prospects and drawbacks of the machines. A short questionnaire was supplied to the participants asking their opinion/comments on machine performance Machinery demonstrated • BRRI Rice-Wheat Reaper • BRRI Rice-Wheat Thresher (TH-7 and TH8) • BRRI Opendrum Thresher.

Achievement/Findings:

BRRI machines were provided to the farmers on nominal cost share basis for long time operation of the machine with the expectation that farmers would be able to evaluate the actual field performance of the machine Farmers reported that the price of the BRRI machine was higher which was beyond their purchasing capacity. So, they preferred to use this machine on rental system. An amount of 2.72 ha land was harvested by using BRRI rice-wheat reaper. An amount of 30.48 Mt of paddy was threshed by using BRRI opendrum thresher. An amount of 5.16 Mt of paddy was threshed by using BRRI rice-wheat thresher (TH7 & TH8). BRRI opendrum thresher was more preferable to the farmers in Aman season as straw length remain unchanged. About 29 farmers were benefited by using BRRI machines in Aman season 2006.
