Performance Evaluation of Planter to Establish Lentil (lens Culinaris Medik.) Under Minimum Tillage Practices

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fuel consumption in CT, SPST, ST and ZT was 41.30, 13.87, 10.29 and 18.49 l ha^-1, respectively. Fuel consumption was highest in conventional tillage and lowest in strip tillage treatment. ST saved 75% fuel compared to conventional tillage. Land preparation included tillage operation by VMP and leveling. Labour requirement for land preparation in CT was highest (15.54) and lowest in ST (10.72). Labour requirement for land preparation in T₂and T₄ treatments were 11.08 and 11.32 man-hr ha^-1, respectively. Carbon dioxide emission was higher (107 kg ha^-1) in CT treatment whereas CO2 emission was 36, 27 and 48 kg ha-1 in SPST, ST and ZT, respectively. ST reduced by 75% CO2 emission compared to CT, respectively. Tillage treatment gave significant effect on land preparation and seeding. Highest land preparation cost was obtained in CT (2311 Tk ha-¹) and lowest cost (785 Tk ha^-1) was obtained in ST because of low fuel and labour requirement. Emergence rate was highest in ST and ZT followed by SPST and CT. The emergence rate was lowest in CT, it may be due to low seed rate. Nodulation was counted at 45 days after seeding. Only nodulation score 5 was obtained in SPST.

Objectives:

To evaluate planter to establish lentil under different minimum tillage options in single pass operation

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the farmers’ field representing high barind tract, Godagari, Rajshahi. The study area lies at 24°31′30.99″N and 88°22′27.10″E. Versatile Multi-crop Planter (VMP) has a built-in mechanism to dispense seed and fertilizer simultaneously. Moreover, it had the facility to perform full tillage, deep tillage, wide tillage, and narrow tillage by replacing tyne and rearrangement of tyne. Four tillage treatments would be considered to establish lentil in drought area. BARI masur-4 (was sown on 21st November 2009. Randomized complete block design (RCBD) will be followed with three replication. Tillage treatment T₁ = Conventional tillage (CT) T₂ = Single pass shallow tillage by VMP (SPST) T₃ = Strip tillage by VMP (ST) T₄ = Zero tillage by VMP (ZT) The descriptions of each ranking need to be interpreted with reference to the attached photograph from Rupela (1990). Data were collected on soil conditions, fuel requirement, task time, seedling emergence, plant stand, days to bloom, days to mature, plant height, plant density at maturity, 1000 seed weight, number of pod per plant, number grain per pod and seed yield. The experimental data were analyzed by a statistics programme. Therefore, variance analysis and DMRT (Duncan’s Multiple Range Test) test would be performed to prove that the results statistically significant.

Achievement/Findings:

The planter capable to perform different minimum tillage operation and safely dispensed lentil seed in single pass operation. Emergence rate was highest in ST and ZT. Land preparation and seeding cost under minimum tillage is reduced compared to conventional tillage. Nodulation score 5 was obtained in SPST. Strip tillage method appeared as cost effective and environment friendly tillage options in lentil cultivation.
