Performance Evaluation of Planter to Establish Mungbean (vigna Radiata) Under Minimum Tillage Practices

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Tillage method showed significant effect on fuel consumption. Fuel consumption was significantly higher in CT (30.64 l ha^-1) and lowest in ST (6.54 l ha^-1). Fuel consumption in SPST, ZT and BP was 26.70, 23.91 and 22.52 l ha^-1, respectively. ST saved 79% fuel consumption than CT during land preparation. Tillage method showed significant effect on labour requirement in land preparation, seeding and fertilizing. CT (66.04) showed significantly higher labour requirement and ST (17.28) showed lowest labour requirement in land preparation. There was no significant difference in labour requirements for land preparation among SPST, ZT, BP and ST. Carbon dioxide emission was higher in CT (79.67 kg ha^-1) and lowest in ST (16.99 kg ha^-1). Carbon dioxide emission in SPST, ZT, and BP was 69.41, 60.36 and 58.55 kg ha-1. ST reduced by 79% CO₂ emission compared to CT. CT showed highest cost (3318 Tk ha-1) and ST showed lowest cost (812 Tk ha^-1) due to low fuel consumption and labour requirement. Cost of land preparation in SPST, ZT and BP was 1749, 1676 and 1739 Tk ha^-1, respectively. Emergence rate in CT was lowest. It might be due to low seed rate compared to other tillage treatment.

Objectives:

To evaluate planter to establish mungbean under different minimum tillage options in single pass operation

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the farmers’ field representing high Barind tract, Godagari, Rajshahi. The study area lies at 24°31′03.4″N and 88°22′11.71″E. Versatile Multicrop Planter (VMP) has a built-in mechanism to dispense seed and fertilizer simultaneously. Moreover, it has the facility to perform full tillage, deep tillage, wide tillage, and narrow tillage by replacing tyne and rearrangement of tyne. VMP was operated for direct seeding of mungbean (BARImung-6) in the farmers’ field. Five tillage treatments were considered to establish mungbean in drought area. Randomized complete block design (RCBD) were followed with three replications. Tillage treatment T₁= Conventional tillage (CT) T₂ = Single pass shallow tillage by VMP (SPST) T₃= Zero tillage by VMP (ZT) T₄ = Bed planting by VMP (BP) T₅= Strip tillage by VMP (ST) Variance analysis and DMRT (Duncan’s Multiple Range Test) test would be performed to prove that the results statistically significant.

Achievement/Findings:

The planter capable to perform different minimum tillage operation and safely dispensed Chickpea seed in single pass operation. Emergence rate in CT was lowest. Labour requirement, fuel consumption, cost of land preparation was higher in CT compared to other tillage options. ST appeared as fuel saving technology in mungbean production.
