Selection of Less Susceptible Multivoltine F1 Hybrids of Silkworm Bombyx Mori L. to Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty F1 crosses were made among four local selectd multivoltine races (males) and five improved acclimatized multivoltine x Bivoltine breeds (female) and Nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) was indiced artificially which were reared under three different environmental conditions statistical analysis indicated highly significant differences due to NPV mortality total loss percent cocoon harvest and single cocoon weight among different crosses and under different environments. The Jaistha (April- May) season accompanied by NPV induction was found to have most adverse effect when maximum NPV mortality rose above 34% and the total mortality above 52%. The corresponding losses were only 2.8% and 11.2% respectively during Bhaduri (July-August)season. The hybrids BSRI-83/2 x Nistari (M) was selected both for Agrahayani and Bhaduri, BSRI-83/2 x BR/84 only for Agrahayani, hybrids NSRI-83/2 x SR1 (O) and BSRI-802 x Nistari (M) for Jaistha and finally BSR-3 x SRI (O) only for Bhaduri seasons based on the resultant least susceptibility to NPV induction and dighest estimated yield per 100 disease free laying.

Objectives:

To select races (s) relatively less susceptible to Nuclear polyhedrosis virus to suit the extreme climates of Jaistha and Bhaduri Seasons.

Methodology:

A total of twenty F1 crosses were made. Group A- Nistari (S), Nistari (M), BR/84, SRI (O) Group B- BSRI-83/2, BSR-3, BSRI-801, BSRI-83/1, BSRI-802. The races of the group A are strictly indigenous and homogygous having capacity to resist high temperature and to some extent high humidity but poor in silk content while those of the group B are evolved acclimatized multivoltine races slightly heterogygous relatively susceptible to high temperature and high humidity, but are comparatively rich in silk content. C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, C7, C8, C9, C10, C11, C12 crosses were made.The experiment was conducted under the natural climate of the three seasons namely a) S1 (Agrahyani) comprising the months of October- November 1986(average room temp. 26.69°C ± 1.1 and relative humidity 90.22% ± 2.91) b) S2 (Jaistha months of April-May, 1987 (average temp. 28.16° C ± 2.42 and R/H 83.56% ± 10.07) and c) S3 (Bhaduri ) comprising months (July- August, 1987 (average temp. 27.51 ° C ± 1.12 and R/H 93.43% ± 2.99). Parental stocks were maintained separately and ten F1 laying were prepared for each cross before each seasons examined and brushed for rearing. After second moult 900 larvae were selected from each cross and were subjected to low temperature (5°C for 25 hours) for reactivation of the Nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) as per technique used by Aruga and Ari (1959) and Aizawa et al (1961). The treated larvae were resumed feeding after one hour of removal from the incubator. All the treated batches weer reared under similar rearing conditions as recommended by Ullal and Narasimhanna (1987). Observation on the mortality due to NPV total mortality percent cocoon harvest and average cocoon weight (g) were estimated for each cross. Evaluation and selection of less susceptible combinations wee made on the basis of least NPV mortality, maximum percent cocoon harvest and maximum estimated cocoon yield per 100 disease free layings (dfls).

Achievement/Findings:

The hybrids C2 (BSRI-83/2 x Nistari (M) may be recommended forS1 (October- November) andS3 (July- August) seasons, C3 (BSRI-83/2 x BR/84 ) and C16 (BSRI-3 x SRI (O) for S1, C4 (BSRI-83/2 x SRI (O) and C18 (BSRI-802 x Nistari (M) for S2 and C8 (BSR-3 x SRI (O) for S3 seasons. It is worthy to mention that the hybrids used in the present study were screened under the induced condition and therefore are expected to exhibit a better performance under natural condition.
