Heterosis and Combining Ability Estimation in Multivoltine X Bivoltine Hybrids of Silkworm, Bombyx Mori L.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Heterosis and combining ability were carried out in a line x tester analysis for three quantitative traits viz.; single cocoon weight, shell weight, and SR% in silkworm, Bombyx mori L. consisting of 6 lines (multivoltine) and 3 testers (bivoltine) with their hybrids in two commercial rearing seasons of Bangladesh. A significant heterotic effect was exhibited in both the rearing seasons. The invstigartiton depicted the high δ gca/δ sca values in S1 showing preponderance of additine gene action while in S2 sca was higher indicting predominant role of non additive gene action. Considering high magnitude of heterosis gca and sca. The best croses were Nistari (L) x Dong-34 (P) , NIstari (l) x Dong-34 (p), Nistari (P) x Dong-34 (P), in Agrahyoni crop and Nistari (P) x RB-SB (P), Nistari (L) xRB-SB (P), and Nistari (l) x RB-SB (P) in Chaita crop.

Objectives:

To find out the magnitude of heterosis and combining ability for the yield contributing characters in Bombyx mori L.

Methodology:

A line x tester crossing design was followed with 6 lines (Nistari (M) –P1, Nistari (P)-P2 , Nistari (L)-P3, Nistari (I)-P4, Nistari (IK)-P5, and Nistari (O)-P6 )and 3 testers (Dong-34(P)-P7, Ziangsu-12 (P)-P8 and RB-SB-P9) of silkworm bombyx mori L. a total of 27 hybrids and parents were reared in three replications in two rearing seasons viz.; Agrahyoni (October-November 98,-S1) and Chaita (February- March 99 –S2). The rearing was conducted in a randomized block design and standard rearing techniques suggested by Krishnaswami (1978) were followed. Cocoons were harvested from the bamboo mount age and deflossed. Observation on single cocoon weight, single shell weight and SR% were carefully recorded. General and specific combining ability (Gca. Sca) and their variances were calculated according to kempthorne (1975). Heterosis over both the mid parent (MP) and better parent (BP) was calcutlated for all the 18 crosses in both the rearing seasons by using the following formula. Heterosis over better parent (%)=( F1-BP)/BP x 100 Heterosis over better parent (%)= (F1-MP)/MP x 100

High δ2 gca/δ2 sca values in S1 showed preponderance of additive gene action while in S2 sca was higher indication predominant role of non additive of gene action. Additive and non additive gene action for cocoon yields and cocoon yield contributing characters in silkworm bombyx mori L. have also been observed by so many silkworm breeders (Jolly et al, 1972, Gamo and Hirabayashi 1983, Strunnikov 1986, Pershad et al. 1986, Govindan et al. 2000 and Ravindra et al. 2001, also found additive gene action in the ingteritance of cocoon weight and shell weight in non mulberry silkworm, Antheraea mylitta. considering the heterosis general combining ability and specific combining ability and specific combining ability the hybrids NIstari (L) x Dong-34 (P), Nistari (I) x Dong -34 (P) and Nistari (P) x Dong -34(P) in Agrahyoni crop while Nistari (P) x RB-SB(P), Nistari (L) x RB-SB(P) and Nistari (I) x RB-SB (P) in Chaita crop expressed best performance.
