Evaluarion of Soil Fertility Status of Bholahat for Mulbrrry Cultivation.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Mulberry grows best in a flat and fertile land and thrives well under deep well drained sandy loam, loam and sandy clayey loam soils provided proper cultural practices are followed (Ullal and Narasimhanna, 1978). Bholahat area is famous for mulberry cultivations as well as silk cocoon production in Bangladesh and about 60 to 70% of the total silk produced in the country comes from tis area. Farmers of Bholahat cultivate mulberry continuously in the same field for years together which depletes soils fertility. As a result yield and quality of mulberry leaves decreased considerably and have affected silk production significantly.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to survey the soils of Bholahat area to evaluate the nutrient status and other physicochemical characteristics with respect to mulberry cultivation.

Methodology:

Composite soil samples were collected at a dept of 0-30 cm from different areas of mulberry growing tract of Bholahat. Collected soil samples were air dried, grinded and screened through sieve. The texture of the soil samples determined by Pipette method (Piper,1969). The pH of the soil samples was determined by a glass electrode pH meter inh 1:2.5 soil water suspension (Jacksome, 1973). Organic matter was determined by chromic acid digestion method (Bear, 1975), and soil nitrogen by Kjeldhal method (Piper,1969). Available phosphorous and potassium were determined by Olsen method as described by Perur et al. (1973 and cobalt nitrite method (Black 1965) respectively. Cation exchange capacity (CEC) was determined by following the method of wildeet al.(1978). The data reveals that the texture of the soils varied from sandy loam to sandy clayey loam with soft consistence, pH ranged from 6.20 to 6.95 which is considered to be highly suitable for mulberry cultivation. Organic matter ranged from 0.66 to 0.77%. waterholding capacity ranged from 42.06 to 51.18% which are not at per with the requirement of mulberry growth. Therefore frequent irrigation is essential.

Achievement/Findings:

In order to produce good quantity and quality mulberry leaves in Bholahat area, chemical fertilizer recommended by Islam et al.(1982) 300 kg N, 150 kg P and 75 kg K ha/year be applied to the soil in four split doses with 2000 to 2500 kg compost per hectare per year.
