Invitro Control of White Mulcardine Disease of Silkworm Bombyx Mori L.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Beauveria bassiana (Balsmo) vuillemin a common fungal parasite, causing white muscardine disease of silkworm B.mori (locally known as chunnakatti). This disease is alarmingly prevalent during Agrahyani (October + November) and Chaita (February + March) commercial cocoon growing seasons in Bangladesh. White muscardine disease is reported to have become a threat to sericulture industry in thecountry devastating almost 50% cocoon crops during these two seasons. Eight different chemicals were mixed separately with and dried lime powder at different ratio. Among the tested chemicals Lime + Boric powder (all concentrations), Lime + Sodium oxalate (all concentrations) were found to be effective in inhibiting the growth of B.bassiana while Lime + Benzoic acid Lime + Sodium carbonate were effective at limited extent.

Objectives:

To overcome the difficulty of white muscardine disease by requirement of the farmers.

Methodology:

Several successful attempts are known to control the outbreak of the disease by application of certain chemicals and fungicides. Krishna Prasad et al (1978) reported that application of Bavistin at 10 ppm inhibit the growth of B. bassiana. Samson and Mummigutti (1978) detected a number of organic and inorganic acids and bases which were proved to be anti muscardine in nature. Till today formalin at different concentrations (0.4-0.8%) with paddy husk (1:10) is popularly used by the sericulturist in India as a control measure over this disease (Baig and Sengupta, 1988). Of last Reshamkeeet oushadh a composite dust disinfectant is reported to have treamendous effect in preventing the outbreak of both fungal and viral diseases of the silkworms (Samson et al, 1987). Preparation of formulating an effective chemical composite to be used readily as dust on the silkworm larvae.

Achievement/Findings:

In order to produce good quantity and quality mulberry leaves in Bholahat area, chemical fertilizer recommended by Islam et al.(1982) 300 kg N, 150 kg P and 75 kg K ha/year be applied to the soil in four split doses with 2000 to 2500 kg compost per hectare per year.
