To produce international grade raw silk there is no alternative of bivoltine and univoltine silk. In recent years, the rearing of high yielding bivoltine races of silkworm in the tropical country is playing a vital role for the development of silk industry. Development of high yielding bivoltine silkworm breeds largely depends on the availability of varied genotypic basic stocks as breeding materials. A sound gene bank with wide genetic base facilitates evaluation of suitable strains for varied ecological condition of the tropics (Basavaraja and Chandrasekharaiah 1988). Silk producing country like Thailand introduced Japanese bivoltine to replace the Thai polyvoltine breeds (Akapanthu 1971, Loasesthakul 1972, Pannengpet and Komutarzon 1972). Advanced silk producing countries like Japan and South Korea had developed a series of diversified bivoltine strains for commercial cocoon production (Tazima and Ohnuma 1995, Hokoyama 1976, Mano et al. 1988). Now India is the second largest silk producing country in the world. India had developed a new techniques of silkworm handling and successfully showed the possibilities of raising bivoltine silkworms in plain. Largest silk producing country China also given much emphasis on bivoltine silk production (Xu and Song 1990). To boost up the quality silk production in Bulgaria, Japanese bivoltines were utilised for commercial cocoon production (Nacheva and Petkov, 1990).

To find out rearing performance of imported korean bivoltine silkworm races under the climatic condition of Bangladesh.

Bivoltine silkworms are generally reared in temperate countries like Japan, South Korea and China. The sub tropical climate of Bangladesh hold reasonable grounds to rear highly productive bivoltine and univoltine silkworm specially during the pre and post winter months. But a very limited number of bivoltine breeds/ hybrids were successfully tested in the field during the specified seasons (Haque 1997 and Haque and Barman 1992). Keeping idea in view Bangladesh Sericulture Research and Training Institute (BSRTI) Rajshahi collected three bivoltine breeds from South Korea during 2000. The collected breeds were subjected to rearing test under laboratory condition. Only one rearing was conducted during the month of March-April 200 in a scientific rearing house. During rearing, scientific technology of silkworm rearing was followed as described by Krishnaswami (1978). In each rearing tray (91.5x76.25 cm) 300 larvae were counted after second moult and continued up to final stage. Three replications were maintained for each breed. The experiment was conducted at room temperature average 20-28°C and relative humidity 70-90%. During young age rearing polythene sheet as bed as well as covering the bed was used instead of wet foam pad for raising the bed humidity in the rearing tray. Mulberry leaves of developed authorised varieties (BM-3 and BM-4) were fed to the silkworm. Observation on fecundity, hatching, weight of 10 mature larvae, effective rate of rearing single cocoon weight, shell weight and length of filament were carefully recorded.

Mean rearing performance of the three bivoltine breeds on different characters are tabulated. Experimental results exhibited much encouraging performance of all the imported breeds under Bangladesh climatic condition. The most effective parameter like effective rate of rearing of the three breeds was found to be ranged from 7542-7989 and length of filament varied from 1085.78 m-1200.00m respectively. Similarly, the single cocoon weight, shell weight and fecundity was much higher in all the breeds than the existing bivoltine silkworm breeds in Bangladesh (Haque, 1997). From the above results, it is clearly evident that all collected breeds reasonably tolerant to Bangladesh condition, although the results reflect the outcome of good rearing season of post winter month. Moreover, these breeds behaved like many of the bivoltine breeds, maintained in the germplasm bank of BSRTI.
