Now a days introduction of hybrids instead of pure line stated a new approach in all the sericulturally advanced countries to increase their quality silk production. As a result, most of the silk producing countries has given much emphasis on quality silk production from bivoltine and univoltine hybrid cocoons. To boost up the quality of silk production in Thailand, Japanese bivoltines were introduced to replace the Thai polyvoltine breeds (Leases Thakul 1972 and Akapanthu 1971). The Japanese F1 hybrids and their F2 progenies were also evaluated and some of the crosses recommended for commercial exploitation (Akapanthu and Chomchuen 1971). Major silk producing countries like Japan, China and South Korea succeeded to develop a series of high yielding bivoltine breeds and hybrid of silkworm which put tremendous impact for the improvement of their own sericulture industry (Chen et al 1994), Hes et al 1990, Yes and Gong 1991, Manu et al 1991). India had given much attention and also succeeded to evolve high yielding bivoltine breeds and series of hybrids. The bivoltine silkworm breeds NB4D2, NB7, NB|8 evolved from Japanese hybrid stock have revolutionized the sericulture industry of Karnataka, Andra and Tamil Nadu states.

  Performance

To find the performance of chinese bivoltine hybrid silkworm, bombyx mori l. Under Bangladeshi condition.

Bivoltine silkworms are generally reared in temperate countries. In our country, the climatic conditions are favourable during the Agrahyani (October-November) and Chaita (March-April) for rearing bivoltine hybrid silkworm. Adequate attempts have been exercised in favour of rearing high yielding multivoltine silkworm breeds but attempts for bivoltine hybrids are still limiting (Haque and Barman 1992, Haque et al 1995, Rahman and Haque 1985). Therefore, during the year 2000, three bivoltine hybrids with different combinations were imported from China. The rearing of this imported hybrids were conducted in a low cost model rearing house of Bangladesh Sericulture Research and Training Institute. The rearing house was very much similar with the silkworm rearing house of the farmers in our country. Two rearings were conducted during the month of October-November (Agrahyani season) and February-March (Chaita season) which was the most suitable rearing season of Bangladesh. During rearing, scientific technology of silkworm rearing was followed as described by Krishnaswami (1998). Third instar larvae were counted. In each rearing, wooden trays (90cm x 60cm) consisted of 300 larvae with three replications. During young stage rearing for raising the required bed humidity instead of wet foam pad polythene sheet as bed as well as bed covering was used. Mulberry leaves of improved varieties were fed to the silkworm. Fecundity, hatching %, larval weight, effective rate of rearing, single cocoon weight, single shell weight, SR%, filament length, renditta and Yield/100dfls were recorded to analyse performance of the breeds. The performance of the hybrid combinations were observed. Tabulated mean value of all the combinations showed good result in all the parameters considered. The cocoon weight, shell weight, length of filament of all combinations ranged from 1.2-1.3(g), 0.27-0.29(g) and 1090.3-1110.0 m respectively. Similarly the randitta and yield/100dfls was much higher varied from 7.0-7.8 and 58.0-55.0 kg respectively.

Among the hybrid combinations the performance of Qin Feng(c) x Bai Yun(J) is relatively better. Experimental results of this bivoltine hybrid rearing depicted that the imported bivoltine hybrids are much productive and can be reared during the pre and post winter rearing seasons of Bangladesh, Moreover these hybrids could be utilized as a source material for breeding programme for the evolution of high yielding bivoltine breeds of silkworm suitable for the climatic conditions of Bangladesh.
