Evaluation of Planter to Establish Wheat (triticum Aestivum) in High BARInd Tract

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Tillage treatment gave significant effect in fuel consumption in land preparation. Fuel consumption of CT, SPST, ZT, BP and ST was 29, 16, 21, 29 and 10 l ha^-1, respectively. ST showed lowest fuel consumption (10 l ha^-1) among the tillage treatments. SPST, ZT and ST saved 44, 28 and 67% fuel in land preparation compared to CT. ST indicated fuel saving tillage technology in land preparation. CT showed significantly higher derived carbon dioxide emission (75 kg ha^-1) during land preparation which was similar to BP and the lowest in ST (25 kg ha^-1). SPST, ZT, and ST reduced 45, 28 and 67% CO2 emission, respectively compared to CT. Minimum tillage saved 63-65% labour in land preparation compared to CT. Tillage treatment showed significant difference in land preparation cost. Highest cost (3993 Tk ha^-1) was required in CT and lowest (1723 Tk ha¬-1) in ST. Emergence rate was highest and statistically identical in CT, ZT and SPST whereas, lowest in BP and ST. Wheat yield showed no statistical significant differences among the tillage systems. Highest BCR was observed in minimum tillage operation (1.32-1.39) compared to CT (1.24) except in ZT (1.12) as the yield was low in ZT.

Objectives:

To compare the fuel consumption and production costs of minimum tillage systems compared with conventional tillage in wheat cultivation on a silty clay soil in high barind tract Rajshahi.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in High Barind tract (HBT), Godagari, Rajshahi. Five tillage systems were compared in the experiment: conventional tillage (CT) with 2WT, single pass shallow tillage with VMP (SPST), zero tillage with VMP (ZT), bed planting with VMP (BP) and strip tillage with VMP (ST). CT consisted of two passes of roto tiller and the final leveling of the plot for seedbed preparation. Seed and fertilizer were broadcasted manually. Other tillage systems consisted of tillage operation by VMP and seed and fertilizer were applied simultaneously in single pass operation. Tillage systems were applied to the same plot during the experimental period. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Wheat was planted with local winter wheat (cultivar ‘satabdi’) at a depth of 4 cm at a 210 kg ha-1 seed rate. Seeding was completed on 20 November 2010. Costs of all the field operations during the growing season were estimated in Taka. The value of the wheat grain constituted the gross income. In arriving at the gross margins, the total cost and gross income/or net economic return was evaluated together and was calculated as plot yield (kg ha-1) to total cost of wheat production. All costs and income figures were presented as per hectare. The results of the economic analysis for the five tillage systems were based on the mean of three replications. Data were analyzed statistically using the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The statistical separation of means among treatments was obtained using the least significant difference (LSD) test at the 0.05 significance level.

Achievement/Findings:

This study assessed the fuel consumption and the economic return of four minimum tillage systems compared with conventional tillage for wheat cultivation in the high barind tract of Bangladesh. The input cost was significantly different for five tillage systems where CT showed higher costs. ST resulted in the least cost because it has less number of field operations for seedbed preparation and resulted with savings, i.e. fuel, time and labour consumption. Minimum tillage saved 24-57% land preparation cost compared to CT. ST by VMP indicated highest cost saving tillage technology in land preparation.
