Evaluation of Multi-crop Planter to Establish Mungbean (vigna Radiata L.) Under Minimum Tillage Practices

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Tillage treatment showed significant effect on fuel consumption in land preparation. Fuel consumption was the highest in CT (55 l ha^-1) and the lowest in ZT (23 l ha^-1). Carbon dioxide emission was the highest in CT (143 kg ha^-1) and the lowest in ZT (59 kg ha-1). SPST, BP and ST emitted 79, 80 and 75 kg ha^-1 CO2, respectively. Labour requirement was significantly higher in CT. SPST, ZT, BP and ST saved 68, 50, 49 and 68% labour in land preparation compared to CT. Highest labour was saved in SPST and ST by VMP. SPST, ZT, BP and ST can save 50, 46, 37 and 51% land preparation cost compared to CT. Emergence rate of mungbean was favoured more by CT than other methods of minimum tillage. Tillage systems showed significant effect grain yield. Grain yield was obtained statistically highest in CT with 0.77 t ha^-1 and lowest yield was obtained in ZT with 0.71 t ha^-1. CT showed the highest costs with Tk 33680 ha^-1 and ST resulted in the least with Tk 31290 ha^-1. BCR was observed highest in SPST and ST and lowest in CT, ZT and BP.

Objectives:

To compare the fuel consumption and production costs of minimum tillage systems compared with conventional tillage in mungbean cultivation in high barind tract Rajshahi.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in High Barind tract (HBT), Godagari, Rajshahi. Five tillage systems were compared in the experiment: conventional tillage (CT) with 2WT, single pass shallow tillage with VMP (SPST), zero tillage with VMP (ZT), bed planting with VMP (BP) and strip tillage with VMP (ST). CT consisted of two passes of roto tiller and the final levelling of the plot for seedbed preparation. Seed and fertilizer were broadcasted manually. Other tillage systems consisted of tillage operation by VMP and seed and fertilizer were applied simultaneously in single pass operation. Tillage systems were applied to the same plot during the experimental period. The experiment was carried out in a randomised complete block design with three replications. Mung bean was planted with HYV BARI mung6. Seeding was completed on 25 February 2011. Costs of all the field operations during the growing season were estimated in Taka. The value of the wheat grain constituted the gross income. In arriving at the gross margins, the total cost and gross income/or net economic return was evaluated together and was calculated as plot yield (kg ha-1) to total cost of wheat production. All costs and income figures are presented as per hectare. The results of the economic analysis for the five tillage systems were based on the mean of three replications. Data were analysed statistically using the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The statistical separation of means among treatments was obtained using the least significant difference (LSD) test at the 0.05 significance level.

Achievement/Findings:

Minimum tillage (i.e. SPST, ZT, BP and ST) saved 45-58% fuel compared to CT. ZT reduced by 58% CO2 emission compared to CT. ZT appeared as environment friendly tillage options during land preparation in mungbean cultivation.
